October 15, 2010 - The River Rock Casino Resort Hotel is pleased to sponsor Vancouver launch of Calvin Helin's new book The Economic Dependency Trap: Breaking Free to Self-Reliance.  The event is also include a fundraiser by silent auction for SOS Children’s Village BC, and the Shudokan Karate & Education Canada Society. Those travelling to the event and attending the after-party are encouraged to book early to take advantage of the special room rates of River Rock Casino Resort Hotel—mention the “Helin Book Launch.”

Guests at the event will have the pleasure of a concert by the hot band Bitterly Divine, a Vancouver-based, new generation rock band. A thundering bass line and syncopated First Nations drumming define Bitterly Divine's sound. Hard driving with a swaggering sense of fun, their songs also have cross-over power: While they are largely an Aboriginal band with five of the seven-members group come from the Squamish Nation their music has enormous universal appeal. Initially a blues band, they learned the 12-bar songbook of the Chicago greats, think an over-amped Sonny Boy Williamson propelled by a 300-pound drummer, with hints of the Who and Nirvana thrown in the mix -- they quickly established themselves as a must-see Vancouver band, playing more than a 120 gigs over the last three years. Musicologists suggest because Bitterly Divine grew up in communities with an oral culture, the band magically adjusts its presentation to a particular audience and venue. "Could be". As lead singer Tewanee Joseph bears his soul about the lows of an inner city childhood, or the disgrace of missing Aboriginal women, he connects on an emotional level that can be disarming. Little wonder the band now plays to increasingly bigger audiences at local and international events. Bitterly Divine is on a mission. No longer a cover band they have gone into the studio to record 10 original songs. Stay tuned. Their cd release drew over 600 people on June 20, 2009 at the River Rock Casino and was the "biggest First Nation cd release"

Guests will also be treated to beautiful voice of nine-year old Ta'Kaiya Blaney who will open the formal program for the book launch with a rendition of "Amazing Grace" sung in her Sliammon language. She will also be singing her latest song called "Shallow Waters" which was co-written with her instructor/professional songwriter/pianist, Aileen De La Cruz. Takaya has also played lead roles in several short films in which she received Leo Award Nominations. Sometime during the concert guests will also be indulged by a dynamic mystery performer whose vocal charms will reign down on the River Rock crowd.
