Vancouver, B.C., September 13, 2010 - After much anticipation, the new book by best selling author, Calvin Helin, is set to be released. Event launches are planned for Vancouver on Saturday October 16, 2010, and for Prince Rupert on Saturday October 23, 2010. The Economic Dependency Trap: Breaking Free to Self-Reliance is expected to set a new benchmark for escaping the devastating pandemic of economic dependency—a situation that has silently crept into all levels of society and is causing massive harm across the globe.

This new effort builds on Helin’s previous best selling book Dances with Dependency: Out of Poverty through Self-Reliance. The Economic Dependency Trap describes how economic dependency is a universal problem impacting all levels of society and nations. Helin points out that there is a way to escape the trap through understanding and knowledge.

National literary icon Peter C. Newman notes, “Calvin Helin’s epic study of dependence—the physical, mental, and spiritual harm it spreads among its victims—is a revolutionary document. A leading indigenous lawyer, the son of a fisherman, and very much a self-made intellectual and reluctant advocate, Calvin speaks for the economically dependent from the heart and from the gut. The collected wisdom in thisbook will lift the burden and let the sun shine in. It sets out a hitchhiker’s guide to freedom, independence, and pride.”

Maori leader Te Taru White suggests, “The Economic Dependency Trap is a must for anyone seeking greater insights into the impacts of economic dependency. Here Calvin Helin boldly raises the bar well over what is stereotypically viewed as an issue for the poor. He has redefined and reassigned thinking about economic dependency across the societal spectrum and supported it with well-grounded research. Reading this book will, at the very least, open the heart and stimulate the mind to greater and better things.”

And Simon Jackson, founder and chairman of the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition suggests, "Calvin Helin, one of the world's foremost thought leaders on poverty reduction through self-reliance, is a true hero of our time. His new book creates a blueprint for a more just, compassionate, and economically sustainable world. As someone who has spent fifteen years engaged in policy debate, I cannot think of a more prudent book for our generation. Drawing from his own story to illustrate his bold vision, Calvin details progressive, innovative ideas for personal and collective action. It is a must read for anyone who cares about the future of our community—here at home and around the world.”

You will not want to miss the two major book launches. Both events will also feature a silent auction fundraiser (or donations may be made) for SOS Children’s Village BC, and the Shudokan Karate & Education Canada Society. Those travelling to the events and attending the after-parties are encouraged to book early to take advantage of the special room rates of River Rock Casino Resort Hotel (Vancouver), and the Crest Hotel (Prince Rupert) as they are expected to sell out quickly—mention the “Helin Book Launch.” To ensure your opportunity to attend these events please RSVP with the number of your party wishing to attend at (604) 275-6670 or online at vernitah@spiritorca.com.
