Vancouver B.C., September 10, 2009 - In May of 2009, the five times best-selling book author, Calvin Helin, was keynote speaker at the conference:
CLAIMING OUR FUTURE: The 3rd National Conference Hosted by the Land Claims Agreements Coalition. Through his presentation Mr. Helin offered hope for a better life to any population trapped in dependency through a strategic plan to increase self-reliance and integrity for Aboriginal peoples.
As part of the author's speech, a short video clip from the nationally
televised Global TV Program
Listen Up
was presented.
The piece
chronicled
the very sad life of an Aboriginal women trapped in Vancouver's East side (to

It turns out the audience of Claiming Our Future was so moved by the stirring piece that an on-the-spot collection was made to contribute to the problem. Amazingly a total of approximately $1,100 was collected from the delegates in attendance.
On June 23, 2009 the author was able to present a cheque to Salvation Army workers, Cherie and Aaron White. The monies will be used as a scholarship fund for a young Aboriginal women who has recently turned her life around from prostitution and substance abuse. Apparently, when the struggling young women was informed of the generosity of delegates of Claiming Our Future she broke down crying tears of gratitude for the opportunity this presented to better her life.
A sincere congratulations must be extended to the delegates of Claiming Our Future for their heartfelt and gracious contribution to this young Aboriginal women.
