MLC Newsletter - Cork
This issue goes out to just Cork area subscribers and some national industry contacts. |
Greetings!
We have split our email database so that we can send news about events in Cork just to those who may be interested. Cork subscribers will receive all emails. Another Ireland grouping will receive certain emails and an international list will receive news only about our festivals, awards, competitions and publications.
August 27th this week was the fourth anniversary of the death of Cork poet Greg O'Donoghue. Some poet friends of his will present a short reading of his work and theirs at Elizabeth Fort Market this coming Sunday afternoon.

Cork Heritage Day |
The Munster Literature Centre will be open Saturday afternoon 2pm-6pm as part of Cork Heritage Day. Frank O'Connor House is defined as a building of special architectural interest because it preserves rare vernacular urban features from the 18th Century.
Frank O'Connor's 1961 BBC interview, filmed in Cork will be shown on a loop. The film is 18 minutes long. It will be possible to buy coffee and a biscuit for 1 euro. |
Writers & Readers Drop-in Centre to be opened |
From October the MLC will launch a drop-in centre where writers and readers will be encouraged to come and use free wi-fi; browse through current literary periodicals (British, American and Irish journals which publish short fiction and poetry) and access our growing collection of video and audio recordings. For one euro you will be able to enjoy a biscuit and a cup of coffee. We also have an extensive selection of short story collections for sale as well as the many titles published by MLC itself. The Centre has always been accessible by appointment but opening times are restricted by our under-staffing situation. August and September are difficult for us because of the demands of the impending annual short story festival, major funding application deadlines and annual staff leave. Often throughout the year staff need to be away from the centre to attend industry meetings or events, but with the help of an intern we hope to be able to open to the public from 10.30 am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday from October through to December. Capacity to open after Christmas will be determined by the availability of new interns.
Special film nights will be organised one night each month from October where we will provide a programme of literary documentaries which have been broadcast over the years on RTE and BBC. Entry to these evenings will be free and a glass of complimentary wine will be served to anyone who buys a book on the night. |
