The shortlist selection for the 2009 Frank O'Connor Short Story Award (in the gift of our good selves thanks to the generous sponsorship of Cork City Council)has created a flurry of comment on the blogosphere with many people excited by the inclusion of three debutants, two previous shortlistees and the prospect of a title from a small press publisher (who issues an average of two titles a year) battling it out with books from the major international conglomerates. Southword takes an exciting step forward with its latest issue.Brian Turner The twice annual literary journal of new poetry, fiction and comment goes exclusively online and will consequently be available to a much wider readership. Frank O'Connor Short Story Festival Shaping Up Nicely
2008 Short Story Fest Poster From September 16th to 20th the festival will have as its main venue the Stack Theatre in the beautiful new Cork School of Music. Workshops and films will show at the Munster Literature Centre itself and the City Library will play host to authors in public conversation and book launches. Besides the shortlisted Frank O'Connor Laureates (read sidebar) there will be readings by ZZ Packer of the United States, Sude of China, Liesl Jacobs of South Africa and a great selection of Irish authors. In the evenings the festival club will feature craic, live music and more readings by deputant authors. Workshops will be conducted by Jon Boilard and Mary Morrissey. There will also be the announcement of the winner of the annual Sean O'Faolain compeition (see below). As each year goes by we welcome more and more audience members from out of town and foreign parts. They never go home disappointed. The Munster Literature Centre can recommend hotels and hostelries for those of you planning to travel to Cork especially for this great festival. There are just three weeks left to enter the Sean O'Faolain Short Story Competition with a chance of publication and over €2500 in prizes. Entries can be submitted by post or online. Full details here.

Cork Poet Aidan Murphy returns home Monday next (13th July) for a reading at O Bheal at the Long Valley bar Winthrop Street. And the Soundeye "alternative" poetry festival starts this weekend and occupies a variety of venues in the city. Google "Soundeye Poetry Festival Cork" for more info. Congratulations also to locally-reared national talent Leanne O'Sullivan for receiving the Chair of Ireland Poetry Fellowship from Michael Longley.
