Q: What is Malware?
A: As defined by Harvard University: Malware is short for malicious software. Malware is software designed specifically to disrupt a computer system. A trojan horse, worm or a virus could be classified as Malware. Some advertising software can be malicious in that it can try to re-install itself after you remove it.
|
Q: How do I know if I have a virus or spyware? A: Being concerned about having spyware, viruses or any other malware is a perfectly legitimate concern. Most of these software types cause your computer's Internet connection to slow to crawling speeds.
You may also experience popups when not surfing the Internet or other erratic computer behavior. The overwhelming majority of searchbars (excluding google and msn) are considered spyware as they inject advertisements onto your desktop.
|
Q: What is a Computer Virus? A: American Heritage Dictionary defines a "Computer Virus" as: A computer program that is designed to replicate itself by copying itself into the other programs stored in a computer.
It may be benign or have a negative effect, such as causing a program to operate incorrectly or corrupting a computer's memory.
The majority of viruses have other objectives such as displaying annoying messages on the screen as well as destroying files or the entire hard drive.
Q: What is a Computer Worm? A: As defined by Wikipedia: A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program. It uses a network to send copies of itself to other nodes (computer terminals on the network) and it may do so without any user intervention. Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program. Worms almost always cause harm to the network, if only by consuming bandwidth, whereas viruses almost always corrupt or modify files on a targeted computer
| Q. How Does My Computer Catch a Virus? | A: If your computer is exposed to a file infected with a virus, the virus will try to copy itself and infect a file on your computer. If you never expose your computer to new files, it will not become infected. However, this is rather impractical.
Recently, some computer users have decided to use a dedicated computer for the Internet and another computer that is not on the network or Internet for sensitive files and important work. By removing the computer from the network and avoiding uploading files, you can avoid contact with viruses and protect your data. |
Keep your Notebook Computer Secure
Keep an "eye" on your notebook computer. A lot of data loss is the result of stolen or lost computers. It is a nightmare if someone breaks into your car and steals your computer or if you forget your notebook at the airport.
For notebook security, you should consider using a LoJack® device (similar to the product used in cars). If your computer is ever stolen or lost, law enforcement will be able to track it down just as if it were a stolen vehicle.
Computrace® LoJack® for Laptops by Absolute® Software is a software-based theft recovery service. It tracks, locates, and recovers stolen computers while providing you with the ability to protect your personal information from identity theft.
In the event of theft, contact the Absolute support team. The next time your computer connects to the Internet, the Absolute Theft Recovery Team will forensically mine it to determine who has your computer. Then they will work closely with local law enforcement to recover and return your property to you.
Data & Device Security If your computer is lost or stolen, the Data Delete service can be used to remotely delete all of your personal and sensitive files from the hard drive. Everything an identity thief would need to steal your identity.
$1000 Service Guarantee If the Absolute support team is unable to recover your stolen computer or complete the Data Delete service, you could be eligible for a Service Guarantee payment of up to $1000. Conditions do apply so please read the service agreement carefully.
