NanoImaging Services specializes in nanoparticle characterization using transmission electron microscopy. We focus on soft biological materials including antibodies, liposomes, VLPs, viruses and other proteins that are used for vaccines, drug delivery and therapeutics for the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industries.

This is a 3D map of a recombinant Hepatitis B surface antigen particle that was performed at NanoImaging Services in collaboration with Merck Research Laboratories. CryoTEM and single particle methods were used for this characterization. The structure is roughly spherical morphology with ''knuckle''-like protrusions projecting from a smooth surface. Segmentation of the map revealed regions of high density, presumed to be protein, surrounded by regions of lesser density, presumed to be lipid. Map shown end-on for the 4-fold (left) and 2-fold (right). The diameter of the particles is 22nm. The work is described in:
