Getting in Rhythm Helps Children Grasp Fractions, Study Finds

Tapping out a beat may help children learn difficult fraction concepts, according to new findings due to be published in the journal, Educational Studies in Mathematics.

Math and Music

"If students don't understand fractions early on, they often struggle with algebra and mathematical reasoning later in their schooling," said Susan Courey, assistant professor of special education at San Francisco State University.

"Lower-performing students might find it hard to grasp the idea of fractions from a diagram or textbook, but when you add music and multiple ways of learning, fractions become second nature to them."

CMF to Offer Trial Lessons

The Children's Music Foundation is currently accepting requests from teachers and/or schools that wish to consider implementing First Note in their classrooms this coming fall.  QualifCurriculum Photoying schools will receive a complimentary two-lesson trial. For more information about the program, please visit our website at www.cmfinc.org . If you would like to receive our trial program, please email us at info@cmfinc.org and we'll be glad to send you a short request form to complete.

Teacher Resources

In addition to the teacher manual, DVD and instruments, the First Note program will feature a Teacher Resource Center (TRC).  Each lesson will have an overview, and videos of suggested teaching tips.  Styles from classroom teachers will be added over time to demonstrate the different ways that each lesson could be presented.

Another segment of the TRC will provide teachers with extensive information on each of the cultures featured in the 30 lessons.  Thanks to suggestions made by those teachers that participated in the First Note beta test, we have included a section called "Theme Builder."  It will provide a template for integrating the different cultures in a cross-curricular fashion throughout each week.  Just one of the many ideas!
