It's That Time!
 
 Several million students headed back to school this month, including more than 7 million kindergartners and 1st graders. Given that 70% of all music programs are funded from outside school budgets, be sure and support those bake sales and car washes that you might come across!
 
 The UK Pursues an Ambitious Project
 
The International Music Education Research Center led by Dr. Graham Welch is conducting research on a 
 National Singing Program in the UK.   
 Sing Up 
 The Program is called 'Sing Up', and is part of a UK Government initiative to support the development of musical activities under the umbrella of its 'Music Manifesto'. We are paying close attention to the findings from the research conducted by Dr. Welch and his team in order to improve our own First Note program!
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
  
 
The 11th Annual ICMPC held in Seattle!
 
Last month, 450 researchers, professors, and others came from all over the world to attend the 11th annual International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, held here in Seattle.  This is a highly prestigious event with a full week of presentations and discussion concerning the impact, value and ultimately the importance of music on our kids and our culture.  The primary strength of ICMPC has been its commitment to interdisciplinary research reflecting a multitude of specialties, methods and individuals from around the world who share an interest in the scientific study of musical thought and behavior. It was quite an experience to attend this amazing event!
 
Dr. Patel Visits with CMF Supporters
 
Dr. Aniruddh 'Ani' Patel Ph.D,(far right) Senior Fellow at the Neurosciences Institute,  visited with CMF Board Members and donors  while in Seattle attending the  International  Conference on Music Perception and Cognition.  He emphasized the significance of the recent decade-long surge in research pertaining to music and its impact on brain development. The findings are compelling and give further evidience to the importance of supporting music as an essential piece of a complete education.
 
Waiting for Superman to open Sept. 24th 

Superman 2Scheduled to be released on Sept. 24, Waiting for "Superman" is a documentary that follows five kids  and their parents as they try to escape their neighborhood public schools for higher-performing public charter schools. The movie explains how it could be that the U.S. since 1971 has more than doubled the money it spends per pupil, yet still trails most rich nations in science and math scores.
