The "Right Fly"

Have you had the experience of struggling to find a fly that would take fish, even when you know the fish are there? If you are like me, it happens. There are no cut and dried answers- no absolute killer flies that work all the time. The conditions on each river are different and each day is different. The water level- the moon- the weather- bright day- dark day- the number of factors that impact fishing conditions is endless. Finding the right fly at any given time can be a challenging process.
In early August, I was fishing the Rapid River in Maine, and the fishing was tough. I was constantly changing flies and changing presentations in an effort to get some action. Late morning, I finally put on a cream colored Usual dry fly and on the first cast hooked up with a nice salmon. It would be easy to assume that I finally found the "right fly" but, I had not. Over the next ten minutes, I had fish rise to the Usual but at the last minute would veer off. I had action but, other than that initial fish, no strikes. As I thought about what was happening, I realized that the fish were looking for something that was "caddis-like" but, the dry Usual was not what they wanted. I changed to an emerger- the West Branch Emerger- and immediately started to catch fish. The lesson??? Observe... Watch how fish take and watch what happens when they don't. Then try to understand why they are responding to your fly the way they do and make the adjustments. The result will be a much more successful day.

Matching Lines to Rods
Does it feel good when you cast your fly line? Over the past few years, I've come to the realization that the label on my fly rod has almost no value for determining the lines that match up well with that rod. For years I assumed that if I had a tough time casting, it was probably my technique or ability. Then, several years ago, I made the trip to Rhode Island for one of Ken Abrames free Fly Rod Tune-ups (www.stripermoon.com). What an eye opening experience!! I met Ken and other people willing to share their experience and knowledge about matching lines and rods and it opened a whole new world of understanding to me. Instead of struggling to cast a 9 weight line on a "9 weight" rod for stripers, I now use a 12 weight line on a "7" weight rod and make casts easily. In freshwater, my "5 weight" rod actually performs best with an 8 weight line. The message??? Experiment. Don't be bound by labels that mean nothing! Try a variety of lines until you find one or more that match well with the rod- make it easy to cast and fun to use. Labels mean nothing! Do you have questions about rods and lines? I may not have the answers but, I might have a few questions that will help you. Email me here.

Shadcreek Jewelry is inspired by the magic of nature and the beauty of the world that surrounds us. As I have created flies from natural materials, I realized that these same materials could create something fun, beautiful and meaningful for people who don't fish. Do you have someone in your life who enjoys the mystic beauty of nature? Share that whim, inspiration and fun by giving her some of my Shadcreek Jewelry.
Stop by my booth at the Wenham Museum Craft Fair (Sept. 12) or the St. David's Craft Fair (Sept. 19 & 20) to see my jewelry and fly selections.
