Local Waters, Old Flies:

This Spring, I've enjoyed exploring some of the local waters right here in Rockingham County.  I've found some beautiful spots and some very cooperative trout.

One of my most productive flies has been a real old-timer, the Picket Pin.  I'm not sure what the trout think it is -maybe a small bait-fish, a flying ant, or a nymph.  Whatever it is, it has been very successful.  Give it a try.  Email me for information about this great old fly.

    Fishing the Moosehead Lake Region
TransformationOver the past several years the group that I fish with has used Maynard's in Rockwood, Maine as the base for our annual June fishing trip.  Generally, there are five or six of us, some of us have fished together for nearly twenty-five years, while others are new to the group.  It is always a time of camraderie, relaxation, enjoying the great outdoors, and hopefully, catching a few nice fish.  Rockwood provides easy access to the Moose River and the East Outlet (the headwaters of the Kennebec River) and, with a little more of a drive, we can reach the Roach River and the West Branch of the Penobscot for day trips.  There's a lot of great fishing in those waters!

The fishing in the rivers and streams in this area is primarily focused on Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon.  While nymphs and streamers can be excellent options, I really enjoy fishing the caddis and mayfly hatches with dry flies.  There is something special about casting a dry fly, watching it drift a few feet, then see it sipped in by a salmon which is almost instantly airborne!

This year, the fishing during our early June trip was excellent.  Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon over 20" were caught and the numbers of good size fish made the trip one to remember.

While everyone has their own personal favorites, the flies that I like in these waters include the Orange Grey Ghost Marabou, Black Ghost Marabou, Montreal Whore and the traditional Grey Ghost streamers.  The Haystack, Henryville Special, Usual, Adams, Elkhair caddis and Hendrickson dry flies along with Gold-ribbed Hare's Ear, West Branch Emerger, Dun Varient and Hendrickson nymphs are also "go to" flies for me.

This region of Maine has a great mix of lakes, ponds, big rivers and small streams.  The Brook Trout are colorful, the Landlocks are leapers and the scenery is beautiful.  If you are going to explore this area, email me to order flies or for information about the area.

"Icelandic Flies"

This Spring I've been working with a client to help him prepare for a late Summer trip to Iceland for Atlantic Salmon, Arctic Char and Sea-run Trout.  This has resulted in quite a bit of "surfing" the internet to identify fly patterns that are popular in Iceland.  While many of the flies used there are common to North America, I was intrigued by some local Icelandic patterns that look like they would be well-suited to our rivers here in New England.  Icelandic FliesTwo streamer patterns in particular sparked my interest- the Rektor and the Flaedarmus (middle two flies in the photo).  Both were designed for Sea-run Trout and Arctic Char and I think they have real potential for our trout and Landlocked salmon fisheries.  If you are planning a trip and would like some help putting together a selection of flies, email me here.
