Streamside Notes
Did you miss any of my earlier Newsletters? Check out the Shadcreek Flies Newsletter Archive.
Have you ever taken the time to pick up a few rocks from a stream bed and look at what's there? I know many of you have. If you have not, just take a moment and look. You'll see a variety of little "bugs"-mayfly and stonefly nymphs, caddis pupae, and a range of other creatures that all serve as food for trout in that stream. This is a good way to identify the size, shape and color of many of the creatures that trout will be feeding on.

Shadcreek Flies - "Estuary Stripers"
Stripers usually return to the North Shore and New Hampshire seacoast in force in mid-May. My anticipation is always high as the end of April arrives and I start to scour on-line bulletin boards looking for news from successful fishermen. When the reports start to come in from Rhode Island and Cape Cod, the countdown begins and it is time to double check lines, reels and fly boxes, and get out to explore some favorite water. I want to be there when the fun begins!
While I fish when I can, a dropping tide is generally more productive for me than the rising tide, so it is a positive sign when the tide charts show a dropping tide in the evening. It is at times like those when I can head out after work, rig up and have a full evening of fun and exploration ahead of me. I generally fish with three flies- giving me a range of sizes and colors. A combination like an L&L Special, Ray's Fly and a small General Practitioner is a good way to start.
As you walk the bars and beaches in the estuaries, look for small seams of current as these will attract and hold the fish. In many cases, you don't need to cast long distances. While the edges of major currents are important, carefully covering the small, "close-in" currents, can result in some excellent fish. Spring is a wonderful time to enjoy fishing the estuaries, so get out and Enjoy!

The Fly Tyer's Bench
Eddie Rief's West Branch Emerger is an excellent caddis imitation and was designed by Eddie, of Bangor, Maine, for caddis hatches on the West Brach of the Penobscot. I've found it to be very effective throughout northern New England. On top of being a great fly, it is easy to tie! The most common colors I use for dubbing the body are green, orange, tan, cream and Hare's ear. Originally, Eddie tied the wing using two breast feathers of a male Wood Duck "tented" over the body. Later, he changed it to one breast feather tied on top and curved to create the "tent' effect. Finish with a few turns of partridge hackle (or substitute soft hen) and you're done. This fly can be fished dry or wet.
Eddie's West Branch Emerger Pattern
Hook: Standard dry fly (Mustad 94840, sizes 12 - 18)
Thread: Brown 6/0
Body: dubbed fur (green, brown, tan, Hare's ear, cream, orange)
Wing: tied like a tent over the body- two breast feathers of male Wood Duck
(note: I prefer the feathers with the white dots!)
Hackle: a turn or two of partridge or soft hen hackle

Shadowbox Memories

Do you have photos of trips that bring a smile to your face each time you look at them?
I do.... and I bet you do, too. A photo of a favorite river with fishing companions can be mounted in a Shadowbox and combined with a favorite fly to make a wonderful gift that preserves those memorable adventures.
