Streamside Notes

In the rivers and estuaries north of Boston where I fish, the first schools of stripers generally arrive in mid-May, however, if the weather is nice, the Spring is a great time to take a walk and see how winter storms and spring run-off have impacted the bottom structure.  Shifting sand beaches, new channels dug, rocks covered or exposed -These changes can directly impact where the fish will hold and how you may want to fish for them.  Rather than arriving at your favorite spot- with rod in hand and ready to fish, only to find dramatic changes from last year-  take the time now to explore and observe.

Suggestion: Go at low tide and bring a camera.  A few photos can reveal quite a bit.

      Fly Fish NH Show
 a great success

Thank you to all the people who stopped by the Shadcreek Flies booth during the show.  I had a great time talking about flies, fishing and warm weather.  It was also nice to see some old friends and to meet new people who enjoy the great outdoors.  While Monday's snowstorm may slow things down, Spring is coming!  Now is the time to check your gear, organize your flies and get things ready for the start of a new fishing season.

I have quite a few flies in stock and, if I don't have the ones you are looking for, I can tie them for you.   If you are not sure what to choose, my fresh and salt water Special Selections- using flies that have been very productive for me over the years are a great starting point, or I can prepare a selection specifically for you. Order now, so you will have them before the season starts.

If you want flies that will catch fish- and give you a connection to our Northeastern fly fishing traditions- I think you will appreciate the flies I tie.  For a price list and a partial list of flies available, simply click here and email me a request.

Fly Tyers Bench    The Fly Tyer's Bench

Maine and the Penobscot River hold many very special memories for me.  As a student at the University of Maine in the late 60's, I took an evening fly tying class from Professor Claude Westfall and have been hooked ever since.  Developing a sense of proportion, an appreciation for colors, and "sparseness" in the use of materials were lessons learned from Claude and have remained very important in the way I tie my flies ever since.

Claude has been a major proponent of the Atlantic Salmon restoration in the Penobscot River and has created a number of Atlantic Salmon Flies that are well known to anglers, both locally and around the world. His Wringer Salmon Fly is included in Col. Joseph Bate's classic book, The Art of the Atlantic Salmon Fly.  Visit Claude's website My Atlantic Salmon for some great photographs of the Penobscot and the fishermen who love that river.

Also, my new webpage highlighting Atlantic Salmon includes photos of some of Claude Westfall's patterns.

Shadowbox Memories

Mink Cove Pool is a wide, deep, long pool that begins as the Tobique River makes a sharp dog-leg turn to the left.  The sand and gravel river bed is fairly easy to wade so starting at the head of the pool and working your way downstream enables the fisherman to cover the water very effectively.  Long-time friend, Tim, and I were enjoying a beautiful day on the Tobique with Phil, one of the excellent quides we had the pleasure to fish with at Riverview Lodge in Riley Brook, New Brunswick.  We had not hooked up yet during that day, but on Tobique there was always a great sense of anticipation for what the next cast might bring.  Phil talked to us about the best ways to approach this pool and we started to fish.  Tim tied on a Copper Killer salmon fly and began to make downstream quartering casts that covered this deep pool inch by inch.  It wasn't long before Tim felt the strike and his reel began to sing as line was ripping downstream.  Then to our amazement, a huge salmon cleared water upstream of Tim.....

Capture that special catch or the trip of a lifetime with a Shadowbox designed to preserve memories.  Email me a photo or share a memory, and I'll give you some recommendations and a quote.
