New England winters can be long and this winter certainly has been.  I participate in a weekly Fly Tying Group at First Light Anglers in Rowley, Mass, and that is a great way to spark the imagination during the winter months as well as getting flies ready for the upcoming fishing season.  Excellent instructors, fun people and a very enjoyable evening each week.

I also enjoy getting out to a few of the fishing and outdoor shows in the region.  I will have a booth at theFly Fish New Hampshire Show in Pelham, NH on March 7th and 8th.  This is a show focused on fly fishing.  It is a great opportunity to talk with people about the upcoming season and pick up some of the those "odds and ends" you always have a need for.  I'll be offering some of my Special Selections for both Salt and Freshwater as well as individual flies.  Stop by the booth.  I'd enjoy talking with you about flies, fishing and the great outdoors.

Do you have a friend who might be interested in the products and services offered by Shadcreek Flies?  I would appreciate your forwarding my email on to them and suggesting that they sign up to be on my email list.  Thank you!

I've been a fly fisherman and fly tyer for many years.  While I always enjoy browsing through the catalogs that come in the mail, I've been struck by the fact that most do not offer fly patterns that have been such an important part of our Northeastern tradition of fly fishing.  When I fish, my first priority is using flies that will catch fish but..., as a student of history, I do appreciate the traditions and history of fly fishing and fly tying as they developed in the Northeast. While some of our traditional patterns have become national "standards", like the Grey Ghost and Black Ghost, there are other very effective flies that have never become popular on a national level, and, therefore, are not offered by some of the major catalog companies.
If you want flies that will catch fish- and give you a connection to our Northeastern fly fishing traditions- I think you will appreciate the flies I offer.  For a price list and a partial list of flies available, simply click here and email me a request.  I'll send you the information you want.

Fly Tyers Bench    The Fly Tyer's Bench

This winter, we've had a major ice storm and a whole series of snow storms.  This has resulted in quite a bit of time at the fly tying vise and some exploration of "new patterns".  I've enjoyed reading some new books and experimenting with some patterns that have been new to me, as well as going back to some "old favorites" that I have not tied in quite a while.  This winter, I focused quite a bit of my tying time on traditional New England streamers and have gone back to books by Dick Stewart and Bob Leeman about Trolling Streamers as well as Joseph Bate's classics on streamers and bucktails.  Old favorites like the Ripogenous Smelt and the Black Ghost were complimented by flies like the Pink Lady and Montreal Whore.

My Freshwater Selections- the Rapid River and West Branch- both offer excellent selections of flies that work for me and that are designed to give you a good starting point for your fishing this year.  To order flies or request pricing and a brochure, simply click here.

 Shadowbox Transformation  Shadowbox Memories

         "Transformation"

Shadowboxes provide great ways to capture memories.  For most of us, our memories of a special trip, a special place or that once in a life-time catch, are things we love to treasure.

Last summer, I was fishing the lower pools of the East Outlet- the headwaters of the Kennebec River as they come out of Moosehead Lake in Maine.  The pools in the lower section looked great but, despite carefully fishing several pools in a row, I could not hook a fish.   Like most of us, my attention began to wander and I happened to spot a beautiful patch of violets along the shore.  Looking closer, I noticed that a stonefly nymph had crawled up out of the water onto the violets, and there- had split its nymphal shuck and been transformed from a nymph- living in the water- to a Stone fly- ready to fly off into the air and move on to the next stage of its life.  I couldn't pass up taking a picture of this spot, and then created a Shadowbox Display which I have entitled "Transformation".  If you are interested in purchasing a copy of "Transformation" or would like a Shadowbox Display capturing a memorable moment in your life, simply click here and email me for a quote.

I enjoy flies that catch fish.  I also appreciate the history of our traditional New England flies, and offer flies and selections that are generally not available from the larger catalog companies.  If you are interested in hand-tied quality by a local craftsman, an appreciation for our Northeastern traditions and flies that catch fish, you will appreciate flies from Shadcreek Flies.
