Greetings!

The holidays are upon us and PARL's staff, volunteers and friends are doing all they can to spread good cheer to the animals in our lives. We want to make sure that the animals in our shelter this holiday season and beyond are having the best experience possible. To make this happen, PARL has several behavioral enrichment programs in the works. These programs are designed to meet the physical and emotional needs of animals during their stay in the shelter. Please take a moment to read our newsletter and find out how your gift this year can be one that enriches an animal's life.

Sincerely,

Carmine DiCenso
Interim Executive Director

Enrichment = Happier PARL Pets
with your help we can do even more...

Exercise, toys and training have always been an important part of the way we interact with our shelter animals here at PARL, and we are happy to say we are in the works of putting together a full Behavior and Enrichment program for our animals! This program will make it possible for us to create well organized play groups, address our animals training needs and use special enrichment toys unique to each animals behavioral needs. Not just for dogs but for cats and small animals alike!..more

Holiday Ornament Fundraiser
help decorate our wish tree!

PARL's Christmas tree is up and waiting for YOU to decorate! For a donation of $5, you can personalize a hand-painted ornament with your name, your pets name or in honor of a past pet. These festive ornaments will be placed on our Wish Tree throughout the holiday season. All proceeds will benefit our shelter animal enrichment programs. It truly is a gift that keeps on giving. Visit us 6 days a week or even better... come to our Open House on Saturday,December 11th. (Donations for our animals can also be placed under our Wish Tree...toys, treats & blankets are appreciated!)
Some Things Truly Do Improve With Age...
just ask our recent adopters of senior pets!

Adopted! Rascal, a ten-year-old shih tzu mix!
November was "Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month" and we are happy to say that many of our cats & dogs over the age of eight were adopted! A new home for any of our shelter animals puts a smile on our faces but it sure is a little extra special knowing that there are so many kind and compassionate people out there who chose to open their homes and their hearts to a senior. We thank all of you who adopted and although a pet that is eight years or older is deemed a "senior" in a shelter environment, rest assured that you all have many, many years of love ahead of you!

Wish List Featured Item
food for our infant kittens

Spring and Summer may be considered  "kitten season" for shelters but that doesn't mean that we don't see litters of underage kittens during the winter months! We currently have infant kittens that were turned in to us without their mother to feed and care for them. Our foster care volunteers are providing them with round-the-clock care and time-intensive bottle-feeding. (thank-you volunteers!)

Can you help us by providing some of the milk replacement diet that they are in need of? We use KMR - a milk replacement in the powder form. Here are some places it can be purchased: PetCoPetEdge or AmazonTogether, we can give these babies  a healthy new start!

Donations can be shipped or dropped off at 34 Elbow Street in Providence. Take a look at our full Wish List to see what else will assist us in the caring for the animals!

Holiday Season Pet Etiquette
simple tips to keep your pets safe

The Holidays are a time for family and celebration, and we all know that our pets are a part of our family! During these festive times we do need to take into consideration the safety of our pets.

Holiday Feasts

Because a good amount of people consider dieting one of their "New Year's Resolutions" it's no secret that we all tend to overeat during the holidays, this applies to our pets as well. Weight gain is not the only reason why you want to make sure your pet doesn't get too many table scraps... more

A Face of Compassion
parl supporter story

photo by Jen Wallace of RI Mag

We would like to introduce to you Mary Goldstein! Mary is a proud supporter of PARL along with her two human companions. As a 3 ½ year old Golden Retriever you can only guess that Mary has bounding energy. She loves to burn off some steam with all of her dog pals at Ruffin' It on their doggie excursions a few times a week. When she isn't busy socializing with her pals she turns to her favorite toy, Mr. Bill, for much needed chew time.  Even with all of this "doggie work" to do, Mary always finds time to indulge in her most favorite past time, working the humans for some treats! Mary will do just about anything you ask of her as long as it is followed up with some sort of "doggie delight". Although she does like to indulge just like the rest of us, Mary is quite health conscious, can you believe that her favorite treat is broccoli?

After a long day of running, munching and chewing you will most likely find Mary asleep in the kitchen on her mat. We were told by Mary's human companions that she snubbed the fluffy LL Bean bed they had purchased for her and would much rather lie on a plain crate mat bed! It's the simple things in life for Ms. Mary.

She is certainly a lucky dog, and with the help of her human companions, she is helping to ensure that other dogs not as fortunate  will get a second chance at finding happiness, just by being supporters of PARL!

Happy Tails!
marty's happy tail

I just wanted to pass on my thanks and update PARL on our beautiful Marty who we adopted almost 7 years ago.

Here is our Family Story! My Husband and I were married in September of 2003 .  It was in November of that same year that we decided to start a family... and by that I mean get a dog! We settled on a breed, contacted some breeders and were put on waiting lists. It was a nightmare. A few days after Christmas I was lost in Providence and stumbled upon Elbow Street and to your location. Being an animal lover I had to go inside and everyday since then I am thankful that I did. I walked into the back and saw so many beautiful dogs and puppies. It was at that second that I decided our 1st baby was here! BUT...How does one choose? So I called in reinforcement, my mother!...more
