Greetings!

parl kittenIt has been a long winter for us all here at Providence Animal Rescue League and now that spring has finally graced us we are abuzz with activity! Like many organizations we are feeling the impact of the challenging economy and seeing a large increase in numbers of animals surrendered to us because of these tough times. Despite these challenges, we are providing the best of care and finding forever homes for each and every one of our adoptable furry charges. This time of year we especially see a large increase in cats and kittens coming through our door but thanks to our wonderful foster care volunteers we are able to provide all of them the love and attention they need until they are ready for adoption.

In the coming months our crew (staff and volunteers alike) are gearing up for a number of events that are critical to helping all the animals in our care. Next week we are hosting our 3rd Annual Auction Fundraiser The Rescue. This "can't-miss event" will feature over 100 unique auction items up for bid - packaged beautifully by our good friends at Dave's Gift Baskets. With a wonderful selection of items I guarantee there will be something for everyone. Since Mother's Day is right around the corner it's also a great opportunity to get something for that special woman in your life and help the animals too!

We are so very grateful to the many community businesses and individuals who donated items or sponsored the event and to you, our wonderful supporters, who help to make our fundraising efforts a continued success. Don't miss out - there's still time to make a reservation and join us! Please check out our links below to learn more about The Rescue and other PARL events.

Volunteer And Make A Difference!
Are You a People-Person?

Volunteering is a wonderful way to help an organization that one finds personally meaningful, meet like-minded people, learn new skills and keep old ones from getting rusty.  There are thousands of volunteers helping in numerous ways in animals shelters across the country.  Although we need and appreciate volunteers to socialize our adoptable animals and keep them happy during their stay in our shelter, we are currently in need of volunteers who can assist with special events and with offsite- adoptions.

As animal lovers, we all know that "animal people" aren't always "people people" and vice versa, but "people people" are the volunteers we most need right now.  Our outreach, fundraising and off-site adoption events require constant communication with the public in an upbeat and knowledgeable fashion about our policies and procedures.  We need people who are go-getters and aren't afraid to approach people and businesses when helping to coordinate an event.

Our largest fundraiser of the year, Pet Walk, is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2009 and we need your help! There is just so much to do and such a variety of ways that you can contribute. In what ways, you ask? Here's just a few examples: poster/registration form distribution, collecting in-kind donations from local businesses, assisting with administrative duties such as data entry, or maybe offering a creative hand by designing signs, flyers or forms. There's plenty of other ways that I'd be happy to discuss with you. Your support will really make a difference.

Did you know that we have an offsite adoption program at the PetSmart in Warwick? This partnership with PetSmart  also brings a need for outgoing, approachable volunteers.  Annually we find homes for over 150 cats. Although we have always provided for the basic care of those cats through volunteers, we now need to increase our assistance with weekend adoptions.  We need volunteers to assist customers interested in visiting our cats and taking them through the adoption process.  Volunteers must be friendly and assertive but still remain non-judgmental while keeping the best interest of our cats in mind.

If you are a "people-person" and would like to help us with events, such as Pet Walk and/or PetSmart adoptions, please visit Volunteer at PARL for a volunteer application and information about our programs or call our Director of Volunteer Services, Shana Cobin at 401-421-1399 x208, or email volunteer@parl.org for additional information.

Keeping Kids Doggone Safe!
Sharing safety tips for you and your family

Doggone Safe and the Providence Animal Rescue League offer the following tips for parents and dog owners to help keep kids safe:

The 3 Most Important Things to Teach Your Kids:

Dogs Don't Like Hugs and Kisses - Teach your kids not to hug or kiss a dog on the face. Hugging the family dog or face-to-face contact are common causes of bites to the face.  Instead, teach kids to scratch the dog on the chest or the side of the neck.
Be a Tree if a Strange Dog Approaches - Teach kids to stand still, like a tree. Trees are boring and the dog will eventually go away.  This works for strange dogs and any time the family dog gets too frisky or becomes aggressive.
Never Tease a Dog - and never disturb a dog that's sleeping, eating or protecting something.

The 2 Most Important Things Parents Can Do:
Supervise - Don't assume your dog is good with kids.  If a toddler must interact with your dog, you should have your hands on the dog, too.  Even if your dog is great with kids and has never bitten - why take a chance?
Train the dog - Take your dog to obedience classes where positive-reinforcement is used.  Never pin, shake, choke, hold the dog down or roll the dog over to teach it a lesson.  Dogs treated this way are likely to turn their aggression on weaker family members.  Involve older children in training the family dog while supervising.  Don't allow children to punish the dog.  Condition the dog to enjoy the presence and actions of children using positive experiences.

The 3 Most Important Things Dog Owners can do:
1. Spay or Neuter Your Dog - Neutered pets are calmer, healthier and less likely to be aggressive.  Neutering prevents unwanted dogs that may end up in shelters or in less than ideal conditions where they may grow up to be poorly socialized or aggressive.
2. Condition Your Dog for the World - Give your puppy lots of new positive experiences.  Train using positive methods, i.e. clicker training.
3. Supervise Your Dog - Supervise your dog at all times around children.  Do not allow children to hug and kiss the dog.  If visiting children are bothering your dog, put the dog away or send the children home.

These tips were shared with us, courtesy of Doggone Safe. For more information about how you make yourself and your family safe around dogs, visit Doggone Safe.

Happy Tails

We would like to share with you a letter that was sent to us from one of our adopters. We hope that you will be as touched as we were by this family's sincere and compassionate reassurance to their dog's past owner. This is one dog who will never want again. Here is their letter:

Dear young man,
I am assuming you are a young man now, because you were just a boy when you gave your heart away to the pet shelter. Your heart was a small, four-legged creature with round, sad eyes and a fur coat the color of burled maple. His name was Dr. Dre and you loved him more than love itself. I'm writing now to let you know what became of your love and to let you know that he is safe, that he is happy, and that he has not forgotten you.

We found him almost five years ago now, in his cage at the pet shelter. We were looking for a dog that would bring smiles to the face of an adolescent who was raging at everything. We thought a dog would be the perfect medicine and, as it turns out, we were more than right.
The pet shelter was full of pit bulls and pit bull offspring on the day we found him. He was yet another one, but so different. As you probably can imagine, because you knew him so well, he was the one dog that was sitting right up at the front of the fenced-in kennel, against the gate, waiting for us to come by. We couldn't help but stop and look at him because he was, and is, so beautiful, and then we stayed and stayed because he was overflowing with love. He craved our hands, he talked to us with his whole body, he wriggled and made small sounds of joy. We talked him over and thought about him, but eventually went on our way.

As we left the shelter, a strange thing happened. We could hear soft cries, almost words, coming from inside. Dre, who had seen in us something that he knew once before, was talking to us, telling us not to leave him behind. He knew, we say now, that we were to be his family - a family that he could love. .... Link to full story
