St. Peter School Gets a Visit from the
Superintendant of RI Catholic Schools

sps collage

By Chad Greenlaw

On March 28th, Mr. Daniel Ferris, Superintendent of Rhode Island Catholic Schools, visited all the classrooms Prek-3 through Grade 8 at St. Peter School in the Gaspee section of Warwick, RI.

He asked the students what they were doing and about upcoming school and extra-curricular events. He also visited with the Principal, Mrs.Joan Sickinger. Mr. Ferris has to visit all the Catholic schools but he came to St. Peter School when he did because he wanted to.

Mr. Ferris is from Arlington, Virginia. He wanted to be a superintendent because he was looking for something new to do. He saw Rhode Island needed a new superintendent. He was an assistant superintendent back in Virginia.

Dylan, 5th grader at St. Peters said "it was a good thing he visited because he was nice." Jason, also a 5th grader said "It was a bad thing he visited because we lost a dress down day." Jonathan grade 6 said "It was a good thing because grade 6 behaved so well we didn't have any homework that day."

He is married and has four children. Three of them go to Our Lady of Mercy. They are 13, 10, and 7 years. The youngest is 22 months old.

What Did You Do for Lent?

By Sophia Kaczmarzyk

lenten breakfast club

Instead of taking something away for Lent you can add something! So St. Peter School decided that it would be a good idea to have the students attend a 7 a.m. mass every Friday. Some people go to mass every morning for Lent, but it would be too much for the students to go every morning. Students just went on Friday mornings. Then, because the students came to church early in the morning for Lent, the students of St. Peter School got to buy or bring a breakfast to school and have a breakfast with their friends. Stephanie Langevin from sixth grade said "I think it's too early. But, its fun!" Paula Cavanagh also from sixth grade said "I think that breakfast club is a good thing for Lent and it's fun!"

History Comes Alive at the Living Museum

By Caitlyn Conway

On April 14th, the third grade dressed up and played their parts as famous people back in the old days. The teacher, Ms. Dwyer, has been doing this project for many years. But this was the first time for this class of third graders and here's what they thought.

abigail adams

Sara says "I liked doing the living museum." Her favorite part was saying the parts and getting the costume. She chose Abigail Adams because "she was the first lady and she was very interesting. "

harriet tubman

Ashley says she liked doing the living museum because she "liked taking the breaks." She chose Harriet Tubman because she was "the most well-known of all the Underground Railroad's 'conductors'."

benjamin franklin

Justin loved doing the living museum. His favorite part was when "the grown ups came to see the class." He choose Benjamin Franklin because he was a leader of America's revolutionary generation.

Irish Step Dancers entertain Classmates at St. Peter School!

By Kara Quinn

irish stepIrish step dancers perform at schools and a lot of places in March. But every year Damhsa Irish Dance Studio performs at St. Peters. The second grade teacher and dance instructor, Mrs. Kenyon, says "I opened up my studio with a partner because another Irish Step studio was closing. So I decided to open it in 2004 and now we have 120 dancers." Grace in 4th grade says "It's my third year dancing because it's really fun and I want my little brother to do it too!" Danny in 4th grade says "I like it because my teacher is really fun." Mrs. Kenyon added "one of the best reasons I like teaching dance is because I get to watch the kids perform." A lot of kids that dance say one reason why they like it is because you get to take that day of off from school on St. Patrick's Day to dance for fun. But some kids say that they didn't even know that they get the day off on St. Patrick's Day. Whatever the reason, the students at St. Peter School enjoyed the performance on St. Patrick's Day!

Has the new Volleyball Team
won any games?

By Stephanie Langevin

volleyballThe St. Peter School volleyball team has been practicing for about 6 weeks in the school parking lot. The team is becoming an actual team by learning how to play the game and how to communicate with each other during the game. They have learned to bump, set, and are working on spikes. "When they are ready, they are going to be a great team" said Maria Piperata gr. 6. The new coach, Virginia McGovern, and the assistant coaches, Christina Kelley and David Langevin. are working hard with them to make sure they do well in the games. On Tuesday April 5th, all the practicing finally paid off because the team had their first game against St. Rocco at the Rejoice in Hope Youth Center. The team won the first set but lost the second two even though it was close game. Then on Tuesday May 3rd the volleyball team had a game at The Rejoice in Hope Youth Center against Woodlawn School and they actually won!
