From the Pastor
"Rescue area or rest area" by Joel L. Domingo, Executive Pastor
This past week, I was at a conference and one of the
speakers was a guy named Mark Batterson.
Mark is the lead pastor of a church in the heart of Washington DC,
called National Community Church and has written a couple of books, one of
which is called, "In the Pit with the Lion on a Snowy Day" (It's on our All
Saints Bookshelf, so check it out!).
What challenged me was a quote that he shared from a Christ follower
around the turn of the 20th century named C.T. Studd:
"Some want to live within the sound
of church or chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell."
Studd grew up as part of an English aristocratic family, yet
an encounter with Jesus changed him to see the need to engage and serve his
world around him as opposed to the world that he knew which was relative safety
and security. In fact Studd's belief in
Jesus compelled him to work and serve in a context that was completely foreign
to him - rural China, Africa and India.
I appreciate Pastor Bill's comments in his message last week
about the choices we make. How fitting it
is therefore, that as we journey together through this series in Colossians, as
we continue to grow, we as a church are always faced with the opportunity to
choose between being insular or engaged.
It is the choice to be always outwardly focused or to be insular, "safe",
and keep to ourselves. I have seen, all
too often those churches that when they get bigger begin to lose that "dangerous
edge," where maintaining programs isn't what it used to be, where they become
more risk averse and settle for mediocrity with its leadership and its
people. It's the attitude that says, "When
are you going to do a gathering for us who have been here, or what about us who
have been here for a while?" The
dangerous edge that helped start the church has now succumbed to settling for
the status quo.
To be truly dangerous with the message of Jesus is not
achieved through rhetoric with dogmatic truth only then to scurry to our own
fortresses of ecclesiastical safety, but rather to move forward and encounter this
city through love and service in the name of Jesus. Could you imagine what that would look like
in Seattle? To truly see this city
changed? I am thrilled, humbled, and
excited to participate in that with you.
I hope that we can all be a little "Studd-ly."
I'll see you on Sunday.
Grace to you.
-
Pastor Joel

This Sunday...
Walking with Jesus Colossians 1:15-23
This week we are looking at the greatness of Jesus and the aspect of maturity that challenges us to believe and understand that Jesus is the unique Son of God. That is hard for many to stomach.
This week we will look at this very defining aspect of belief that Jesus is the way to the Father.

Just so you know...
General Request: We would like to encourage those of you who get to hang out at All Saints during a gathering that you are not participating in to enjoy your conversations in the Life Group Lounge, downstairs in the Beanaddiction Cafe or somewhere other than the Commons area. It can be distracting to have conversations taking place in the Commons during the message. Thanks for your consideration!
Prayer: Please join us upstairs in the loft at 9am on Sunday mornings for prayer. The invitation is open to all, but if you are a Sunday morning volunteer we ask that you please make every effort to be there.
We are also going to begin opening the church at 6:30am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for anyone who wants to come in and spend some time in personal prayer and reflection.
All SaintsForum: All Saints' first discussion forum on Thursday with Dr. Jim Wellman, "Church Culture in the Pacific Northwest" was a great success. We had 26 people in attendance and some challenging discussion was generated.
Men's Ministries: The Men's Ministries breakfast is this Saturday! All men are invited to meet at All Saints at 9am for breakfast, great company, and Pastor Bill's talk about "sex". A donation of $10 is suggested to help cover the cost of food. If you haven't had a chance to sign up, you are still welcome to participate!
Life Groups: The date for the life group leader training meeting has been changed to Sunday, May 17th immediately following the 11am gathering. If you are interested in leading a life group this summer, stop by the concierge desk for an informational packet and sign-up to have our life groups coordinator to contact you. Or just email Stacy Baas at lifegroups@believedoubtseek.org
Events for All Saints Volunteers:
- Leaders@7 on Tuesday, May 19th from 7-9pm at All Saints. A time for vision casting and touching bases. If you serve at All Saints, please make your best effort to be here for that meeting.
- Volunteer Appreciation Night on Friday, June 5th. This is our opportunity to show our appreciation for our volunteers with some great food, fun awards, and other surprises.
Children's Ministries: This Sunday during the 11am gathering Children's Ministries will continue a tradition of reaching out to our neighbors by delivering spring flowers to their doors. Please help by donating potting plants for the kids to deliver on May 3rd and/or volunteering to join the kids and the Children's Ministries Team for the deliveries. If you have questions or would like to help please contact kids@believedoubtseek.org.
Youth: The Youth Team will be holding an Amazing Race event for youth on Saturday, May 9th. They'll meet up at All Saints at 11am and hit the city!

If you have friends in middle school or high school that might enjoy either of these events, or if you have questions, please email: youth@believedoubtseek.org
