What's Happenin' at OWH?
Wow, it's already October! Our winter cover crops are 100% in, and are growing quickly. We are starting to harvest our fresh Ginkgo leaves and Valerian root, and will soon be digging Astragalus and Echinacea purpurea root.
The mornings are cool and damp, and you can feel the change coming. It's a beautiful time of year here, as you can feel the farm preparing for a long winters nap. But, here at OWH, nothing ever really sleeps - as this farm is alive....
Biodynamic farming is our way of life, here. We refer to charts and a calendar by Stella Natura to tell us exactly when we should be harvesting our roots and planting our seeds for next spring. We listen to the red-tailed hawk in the distance, and watch the 18 bee hives make the most wonderful honey. We add Biodynamic preps to our soil, creating energy and plant life which gets better and better each season.
As we move in to the first few days of fall, things are looking good. We expect bountiful harvests of fresh root, and will continue collecting seeds for next years herbal planting. We are so thankful to have such a good life, and a healthy farm.

Immune Supporting Herbs
The Immune System is a combination of body systems, organs and glands that work together to protect the body. One-half of all the cells in our body play a part in supporting our immune system. Our environment is full of microbes waiting for a chance to invade the body and make us feel less than optimum.
Building, supporting and strengthening the delicate balance between the immune system and neuroendocrine system is a very important step in achieving good health.
Here are our Top 5 for Supporting Your Immune System:
- Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep significantly reduces disease-fighting white blood cells.
- Wash your hands frequently. Since most germs are transmitted through our hands to the mouth, nose and eyes it is best to have clean hands AND be mindful of touching your face.
- Get fresh air, even in the cold. In the winter we spend too much time indoors in contact with other people's germs. It is good to open a window and get outside as much as possible.
- Eat lots of fruits and veggies. Fresh produce, especially those that are colorful, boost antioxidant activity in the body, which promotes a strong immune system.
- Reduce stress. The stress hormones that are created when we feel stress wreak havoc on the adrenal glands, and the entire body. These hormones suppress white blood cell production in the thymus gland. Try meditation, yoga, relaxation exercises and massage.
