Best Growing Season in OWH History!

We've just completed our second full growing season using biodynamic methods, and the results are in: our Ashwagandha, Echinacea, and Astragalus harvests were the best ever! Plants were bigger, had stronger roots, and the flowers and seeds were much more bountiful than they've ever been before. And that's really saying something, because our crops were plenty healthy and robust to begin with.

We have also just completed our harvest of most of our root crops, so we have a fresh supply of dried Echinacea, Ashwagandha, Dandelion, and Astragalus going into our products. We also just received a fresh supply of organic milk thistle - just in time. This crop can already be found on our production line for finished products. Fresh dried certified organic Saw Palmetto is due to arrive any day, and that, too, is just in time.

We have mastered the art of growing, harvesting, and purchasing plant material in a timely manner, so everything that goes out our door and into your stores and homes is a fresh as humanly possible.

Welcome to Our Newsletter!
December 2008

Welcome to The Herb Patch -- the official newsletter of Oregon's Wild Harvest.  This is the 7th publication of  The Herb Patch, but the very first electronic version.  I guess you could say it's The Herb Patch's maiden voyage through cyber space to your computer.  We hope you will enjoy this new medium, and find our newsletter even newsier than ever.  The new format allows us to provide you with longer, more in-depth articles with links that will take you to more about the subject (or you can just read the Reader's Digest version -- that's fine too).

The electronic format is more consistent with our values of sustainable living than was our previous, traditional paper newsletter.   We hope you'll find that while we're using less paper, and sacrificing fewer trees, we're providing more information than ever -- more herb news, studies, recipes, information and ideas you can use today.

If there's a topic you'd like to see us cover, please let us know.  This newsletter is for you, our customer.  Drop us a line with a comment, idea, or question at questions@owharvest.com.  Have a healthy, happy holiday season...

To your good health,
Randy Buresh

Amazing Adaptogens

We cannot be sure when plants were first used by man for reasons other than food. But we do know that in all parts of the world, there is a long history of the use of herbs that grow specific to that area. For thousands of years, herbs have been used for medicinal purposes, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. However, only in the last few decades have herbs been the subject of scientific research.

There is a unique group of herbs which appears to have an impressive ability to assist the body as it adapts to stressful conditions. These amazing herbs are called adaptogens. The term adaptogen comes from the Latin word adaptare, which means to fit or adjust. Adaptogens are highly regarded for their ability to increase resistance to stress and fatigue.

This combination of two very important herbs is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The organic Reishi is carefully grown on organic millet to nurture its level of polysaccharides. The organic Astragalus root is classified as premium grade due to the age and the size of the root. Studies have shown that the active components are concentrated in the primary roots, and that the levels are highest in older roots.

Digestive Bitters, Organic 4oz.

Extensively used in Europe, herbal bitters help enhance digestion by stimulating our taste receptors on the tongue, which subsequently stimulates enzyme production and bile flow. This action promotes healthy nutrient absorption and aids in the digestion of fats. Bitters are especially helpful after consuming fatty, heavy meals to speed the digestion process and eliminate feelings of bloating. The increased stimulation of bile supports the body's natural cleansing process, especially if digestion is sluggish.
