 GALA Newsletter
GALA was organized to promote the arts as an essential component of a healthy community. We believe that artistic expression is a community's greatest legacy for future generations. GALA will increase awareness and appreciation of the arts by way of exhibits, instruction, theater productions, musical programs and provision of scholarships to students in local schools.

Salon des Refuss 2011 Exhibit in Fitchburg
|
At Design at 639 rejection equals acceptance in the third Salon de Refuss, a unique showing of art and sculpture by local artists. All pieces in the display have been previously rejected at the Fitchburg Art Museum's annual Regional Exhibition.
The tradition of a "Salon des Refuss " (or "exhibition of rejects") dates back to 1863, when an uproar occurred following the rejection by the official Paris Salon Jury of an unusually high number of submitted paintings. As a result, the French Emperor Napoleon III ordered that painters whose works had been rejected could exhibit in a show adjacent to the Salon. The exhibit included the work of many artists who are now considered masters, including douard Manet, whose "Luncheon on the Grass" (Le djeuner sur l'herbe) and James McNeill Whistler, whose "The White Girl" had been turned down by the Salon Jury.
Salon des Refuss 2011 is on exhibit now until Sept. 3 at 639 Main Street, Fitchburg, MA. Go to top
