We believe that artistic expression is a community's greatest legacy for future generations. GALA will increase awareness and appreciation of the arts by way of exhibits, instruction, theater productions, musical programs and provision of scholarships to students in local schools.

GALA Featured Artist Michael Williams
|
"Fire Wire" by Michael Williams (Click on image for a larger version.)
I became interested in photography at the age of
12, when my family won a Minolta SRT101 during my Little League opening day
festivities; and like a proper New England Yankee I could not let something
free go to waste. It was through Ansel Adam's three books of photography; The
Negative, The Camera and The Print, that I developed an understanding of the
sciences behind this art form. I have also been greatly influenced by Eadweard
Muybridge, who is most notable for the development of stop action photography
and his studies of the animal and human forms during movement. My admiration of
Adams and Muybridge does not solely rest in their rich images, but it is in
their mastery of the mechanics of the equipment and processes which enabled
them to push and find new limits. Read more
Be sure to visit the GALA website to see Mike's work beginning the first week of August.
See the solo exhibit of Mike's work at the Greater Gardner Community Development Corporation until Aug. 28th and read the press release sent out by Jim Cruickshank, Executive Director of the CDC.

Macro and Close Up Photography
August 29, 2009 10:00 am - 2:30 pm
at the Sharon Arts Center
Through macro photography we can
enjoy a whole new world of photographic subjects and opportunities. Insects,
interesting flora, tiny details and patterns can fill our photographs. During
this workshop we will discuss equipment and techniques for macro photography,
spend time in the field photographing, and finish by reviewing and discussing
the photographs we made. (Click on image for a larger version.)
For more info, go to Sharon Arts Center or call 603-924-7256.

A Couple (Hundred) Words About Your Art
|
Once again we are asking artists with
work in the Fall Show to submit an Artist Statement. Given the large number of participating
artists, we are requesting that these statements be brief. Just one or two paragraphs of three to
four sentences (roughly 100-200 words) would be ideal.
If you already have an existing
statement, you may need to supply an edited
version. If you are writing one for the first
time, this is a great exercise for reflection on your creative process. Sum up what you think is important about
your art. Touch on the techniques and
materials you use
to achieve your artistic vision. Additionally, you are encouraged to include
one or two images on the page: a
headshot of yourself and a photograph of one of the
pieces that will be on display.
Send all of this along to Joanne
Holtje: jwholejay@aol.com Deadline October 2, 2009.
