Greetings!,
On Mother's Day this year, let's take a moment to appreciate our true mother - Mother Earth. Today, we can celebrate our relationship not only with our biological mother but also with Gaia - our Pachamama - the source of all life.
Indigenous people recognize and honor this relationship. They have not forgotten their connection to the earth and to all beings. In the mythology of the first nations, humanity has not been expelled from the garden, we are still in the garden and we are its stewards. We need to reclaim this world view if we are to survive. To do this effectively, we must learn to see the world through the eyes of the heart.
Western civilization has made great advances in many ways, but the price has been too high. Our standard of living threatens life itself. Our intellect, our theories, our policies and politics have been shaped by our minds with little regard for the balancing wisdom of our hearts. We must re-activate our heart energy so that wisdom and compassion color our actions and our thoughts.
Years ago - when I met Alverto Taxo - he told me of the great prophecy that in these times the Eagle (the mind) and the Condor (the heart) will fly together in the same sky. This will initiate a fundamental change in the way we live - in life itself. According to Alverto, the transformation will happen regardless of what we do, but "...helping is good."
I believe that the most important thing we can do to help is to open our hearts. We can do this by being fully present in the moment and savoring everything with gratitude and appreciation. This practice is invaluable because it changes how we are and what we can do.
Once we have activated our hearts, we can look around and help where we can. Taking positive personal, political and social action is a powerful and effective way to translate our wisdom into reality. Giving generously of our time, our money and our resources can fuel a process of healing that will improve the chances that our lives and the lives of our children will be secure and peaceful.
We are at a crossroads. Those of us who can see and understand this, must ask ourselves what we can do to preserve our planet and the human race. When we make a commitment to creating a just and sustainable world, we become those who dream heaven on earth.
Let's honor our mothers by passing on the gifts of life on this beautiful earth to our children and grandchildren.
