Greetings!,
"Before Enlightenment: chop wood and carry water.
After Elightenment: respect wood and appreciate water."
-Sylvia Golbin
How would you like to be in the right place at the right time? Sounds good, doesn't it! Well, this is not only a good idea; it is the highway to Enlightenment.
Most of us have this "peak" experience from time to time, but usually, our minds create a delta between "what is" and "what we want" to be. This delta causes us to be eternally out of step with life and creates most of the suffering and, also, the negative outcomes in our lives. The truth is that we are always in the right place and it is always the right time - realizing this, we set ourselves on the highway to Enlightenment.
Take the present moment. If we ask ourselves if there is somewhere else we should be, some other way we should be feeling/thinking or something else we should be doing, many things may come to mind. These answers are valuable because they point us in the direction we need to navigate to. However, right now, there is no place we can possibly be but "here" and no other time that we can ever be here except "now." So, clearly, we are in the right place at the right time - already!
This realization could be the first step to permanent enlightenment. Appreciating what is in the present moment and embracing it fully is what I call "Radical Acceptance". By practicing Radical Acceptance, we take a giant step toward creating the life we want and loving the life we have. This practice involves consciously embracing each moment and each thing in our experience as a blessing and a gift. This does not mean being indiscriminate - the ability to choose and to have an intention or goal is how we navigate.
Perhaps this seems easy, but -yes- there is a catch. While we all have the ability to be enlightened, most of us cannot consistently achieve this state without working at it. There is a story that a famous musician was stopped on the streets of NYC and asked how to get to Carnegie Hall. His answer? "Practice, Practice, Practice!"
So, my offer to you is this: begin now.
