Getting the most out of your Laptop Battery

Every laptop owner wants longer battery life. Most laptop batteries will give you between one and two hours of computer use, some as much as 3+ hours. Getting the most out of your laptop battery requires using common sense and some slight adjustment of various settings on your laptop. With proper charging cycles, initial calibration, and other battery maintenance habits you can increase those times.

Why buy refurbished?

Under even the best of circumstances, most manufacturers experience "failure rates" that are fairly consistent for products that roll off their assembly lines.

Statistically, the chance of having a problem in the first year of owning a refurbished computer is considerably less than if you bought that same product "new-in-the-box", right off the assembly line.

A refurbished product may be an item that had an immediate problem, or wasn't what the customer ordered, or was a "Demo" product at a trade show or store. In any case, it is thoroughly gone through and tested before selling as refurbished. The manufacturer doesn't want to deal with it again if they can avoid it.

Dell, Apple, Gateway, and many other manufacturers usually have online stores to sell their refurbished goods. Almost always they offer full warranties and may qualify for optional extended warranties.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Check out the Quicklinks at the left for quick access to some keyboard shortcuts, for Macintosh and PC, to improve yoimage compliments of freefoto.comur keyboard productivity and efficiency.

It amazes me when I'm working with a client and I invoke a keyboard shortcut and my client replies, "How did you do that?" or "I didn't know you could do that...". It is obvious, they want to know more.

Did you know that every time you remove your hands from the keyboard (to use the mouse) you are reducing your efficiency? It's true. Not only that, but keeping your hands positioned on the keyboard increases typing accuracy. So look for shortcuts that will help you most in whatever application or operating system you are using.

One of my favorites is "Windows + D" to minimize every open Window and Applications to quickly reveal your desktop. Repeating the shortcut will undo the action. On a Mac, use "F11".

One of the most commonly used shortcuts is "Ctrl + S" (or "Apple + S", on a Mac) for SAVE, and "Ctrl + P" (or "Apple + P", on a Mac) for PRINT. In fact, you'll notice that shortcuts on Macs are quite often the same as those on PCs, except for the use of the APPLE Key on the Mac instead of the CTRL Key.

If my links don't take you to the shortcuts you need, try Google. For example, search for ["Microsoft Word" + "Keyboard shortcuts"] without brackets, but WITH the quotes, to find keyboard shortcuts for Microsoft Word.

FileMaker Pro
FileMaker Pro 9
Do you use FileMaker Pro? Or, are you using a spreadsheet to keep track of data? If you are using a spreadsheet you should consider the benefits of FileMaker Pro. It is simple to import your spreadsheet data into FileMaker Pro, in most cases.

I've been using and developing in it since 1989. That's right, all the way back to version 2.0. It is absolutely my favorite software application. You'll find all kinds of solutions on how it can be used by talking with me about your needs, going to various links to FileMaker Pro resources that are everywhere on the Internet, if you know where to look.
