AMERICAN MURAL PROJECT
| July 2010

I am writing this after a very busy May and June for AMP. A full auditorium of wonderful women in Omaha welcomed me to talk about AMP, sixty-eight kids did a project at the Winsted mill, hundreds of people in New Haven decorated the latest of our giant links, and sixty more came to support the project at a party in New Canaan. Nonstop activity for the past eight weeks and the AMP staff, board, committees, and volunteers have given every ounce of effort on behalf of the project.
I am really looking forward to lighting a few fireworks and enjoying a long Fourth of July Weekend at home.
Get excited. Some great reports below. Ellen

AMP Member's Reception
On Friday, May 21, AMP held its second annual membership
party at the Winsted mill. Many loyal local members showed up as well as people
from New York and Massachusetts . The record for farthest drive to the party
goes to Randy and Mary Sisalak, members who drove from Maryland with
their daughter, Rachael, and son, Treith. If that wasn't enough to show loyalty
to AMP, Rachael and Treith flew in from Germany two days before, from where her
husband, Christopher, is serving in our armed forces. We were also lucky enough
to see Linda Louise and her husband, Jerry, on leave from Iran.
The head of our Development Committee, Jim Garfield,
arranged the catering, while his wife, Nancy, served as our bartender. Many
thanks to John Lavieri, Mark Ronaldes, Gladys Cerruto, Alan Colevecchio, Shari,
Tim, and Holden Marks, and Jim and Nancy for all the work up front as well as
during the event itself. We do have the awesome crew for this kind of event and
they have it down.
If you haven't already, check out the website for the
fantastic photos Anita Garnett took for us during the evening; they really
captured the feeling. Click here to view photos from recent events.

Alcoa Action Day with Howmet and Sterling
Ten days before our annual membership party at the mill,
Alcoa donated another Action Day to AMP. After a long winter and early growth
spurt this spring, volunteers from Howmet and Sterling came out with rakes,
shovels, wheelbarrows, and weed whackers to clean up around the outside of the
mural building. In a long afternoon of work, they filled an entire dumpster with
debris.
I say this every time but there is no way we would be making
headway without the help we receive from Laurie Roy at Howmet and John Lavieri
at Sterling, not to mention all the volunteers who continue to support and
believe in the project.

Open Mill Days We have had several open-mill days since our membership
party and some terrific visitors. In late May, Amy Connelly brought her ELS class from Northwestern CT Community College to tour the mill and learn more about the
mural. It was great fun to get input from this group, and, as always happens,
several new ideas emerged.
On June 7th, we welcomed 68 fourth
graders from McKinley Elementary in Fairfield to the Winsted mill, a special
field trip arranged by Kathy Reddy, head of the school's art department and
member of our AMP Teachers' Advisory Board.
The arrival of the two giant buses at Whiting mills caused
quite a sensation. Mark Corbrin, head of Provident Millwork, whose studio is
located in one of the spaces at Whiting Mills, offered to give the kids an
unplanned tour of his shop to start the morning's activities. The kids got to
see firsthand the beautiful woodworking that takes place next door to the
mural's future home; it was not too much of a leap for them to understand the reason
for creating a tribute to people like Mark.
After lunch and some talk about the mural, the fourth
graders started a printmaking project together, finished later with Kathy back
at school. We will post the picture of the finished piece in an upcoming
AMPnews. Click here to view photos from this event.
Last week Irene Engle and a group of volunteers
from UConn Health Center toured the mill site. Great group of women and
terrific audience on tour with great questions about the mural and its programs. Photo: Ellen at the mill with the ELS class

Ellen speaks at
General Federation of Women's Clubs National Convention in Omaha.
On the second weekend in June, Ellen spoke to those
attending the National Convention for the General Federation of Women's Clubs
about AMP. With an extremely strong support group of GFWC members from
Connecticut, Ellen and the AMP cheerleading squad spoke with almost every
attendee at the convention about the project, asking for their support in each
state. The attendees were enthusiastic about AMP's national fundraising project,
introduced at the convention: the GFWC Watch Project, on which AMP will collect
watches for the mural, symbolizing the time women's club members have given as
volunteers, from each of the 110,000 national members. Kim Hohlfeld and Judy
Albright are taking on the organization of this collection project through all
the state women's club presidents.
Great thanks to the Connecticut members of the GFWC who
attended the convention and stood by for three days helping Ellen in every way
imaginable, from watching the AMP booth and explaining the project to state
representatives, to keeping her entertained during the 'off' hours. While other
states chose to dress formally for their state group portraits, Connecticut chose
to be photographed in AMP t-shirts!

Links Project At
International Festival of Arts & Ideas
On June 19th and 20th, with support from TD Bank, AMP participated in this
year's Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven, Connecticut. Countries from
around the world participate in this event throughout the month, and AMP was
thrilled to be invited.
We were busy from 3 PM to dusk; hundreds of people came up
to work on our third giant recycled-paper-pulp link. Paint and glitter were
everywhere and will mark our spot on the Yale Green for a few weeks to come.
AMP thanks all the organizers of the event, who were
incredibly helpful, Shana and Cat in particular. Janet, Lorraine, Carol,
Mischa, David, Kathy, Roger, Annakate, Rachel, Sam, Sofia, Taylor, and Cloe -
thank you for showing up all day and staying to clean up without complaint. Two
long days, and another gorgeous link is ready for the mural.

Next stop, link number four, July 10th, Gathering
on the Green in Wisconsin.

Habitat materials
from build project coming in to the studio from all over.
It is pretty exciting these days to see the UPS or Fed-Ex
truck arrive at the studio. In May, Kim Blanchard and Melody Altschuler
delivered a 1x8 piece of wood signed by all the Ethel Walker students who participated
this spring break on a Habitat build in Georgia. Given its size, we knew the
piece had to be from EW. The girls went all out on the artwork.
Cyrus Weigand and the build students at Bluffton University
contributed a great piece from their most recent build, and Holly Fetters and
her group from Woman Build donated an unusual piece, the cut-off, muddy paint
legs from Sharon's Levis, contributed after a wet foundation stage of a build
project in Ohio.
Our biggest contributor, still on the move, is Eugene Korsunskiy
and his Bike & Build team. Since the end of May, this group has been biking
across the United States, stopping along the way to work on Habitat projects.
They have sent four amazing pieces so far: from South Carolina, Georgia,
Alabama, and Mississippi. They are headed into the middle of the country as we
reach the end of June. If you want to follow Eugene's progress, click here. Occasionally you may catch him photographed with an AMP t-shirt.
Awesome job, Eugene. Congratulations to all of you from all
of us sitting on our butts back here anticipating the next delivery!

Project. Photo: Eugene Korsunskiy and the Bike & Build team.

The American
Mural Project is a three-dimensional painting so large that a special building is being created for it. It is a celebration of American
ingenuity and commitment to work. The project seeks to inspire, to invite
collaboration, and to reveal to people of all ages the many contributions they can make
to American culture. It is intended as a tribute and a challenge.
