AMP Spotlight

We are speeding through spring and there is much to report.

First and most exciting, we have a new website. After we talked for a while about a redesign, Judy Posey, Molly Woodward, and Jamie Kleiman of Low5 Productions asked if they could have a go at it. Six months later, with ongoing requests for clarification on different aspects of the mural project, the two design majors with their expert web master came through with this new, clean, easy-to-navigate site for AMP. With all the different elements that make up this ever-growing project and organization, this was no easy task. I am so grateful these three stayed the course, demonstrating terrific patience while serving up one great idea after another from the first day to the finish. And, if that was not enough, they donated a significant portion of the work.

If you have not visited our site in the past few weeks, take a look.

Habitat Project
AMP install
Habitat for Humanity build projects are in full swing.

We are starting to get great pieces of scrap materials from the 2010 build projects for Habitat. We are always excited about this time of year, anxious to see what pieces people are sending us, how they have signed, painted, embellished them and what pictures and stories accompany their contributions. Starting next month we are hoping to post a gallery of volunteers' pictures on our website accompanied by some great quotes from the field.

If you have scrap materials from a Habitat build project, get in touch with us for shipping instructions and keep them coming!!! We need lots of pieces to make this section really work
.

Upcoming Events

Wisdom House Retreat and Conference Center, LItchfield, CT

On Sunday, April 25th, Ellen was invited to participate in a panel discussion - how artists view themselves and their work in this market-driven society - moderated by Jack Gilpin, theater and TV actor. The four panelists from the world of theater, music, art and creative writing were not at a loss for words on this topic. Not surprisingly, they shared similar views about their role in society and their responsibility to their audience in the creation of their work. Lots more enthusiasm and interest in AMP as generated from this new audience.

An accompanying AMP installation will be on exhibit in the Marie Louise Trichet Art Gallery at Wisdom House through the summer.

Member's Reception, Friday May 21st

Coming up, our annual member's reception at the Whiting Street mill in Winsted. With the generous support of Union Savings Bank - Joe Greco and Mark Ronaldes in particular - we are looking forward to another fun evening as we open the mill doors for the first time in 2010. This has become a favorite AMP event and a great way to mark the beginning of summer. Hope all AMP members in the area can make it. We may even have a few cases of Griesedieck Bros. beer on ice.

Last, the best

In the last year, two members of our AMP team and one AMP student participant achieved the lofty and insane goal of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. A determined Rebecca Bryan - our fundraising consultant - did it last summer, and our photographer, Judy Griesedieck, and her daughter, Taylor Healy, did it this past month.

Rebecca: "Kili will always hold a special place in my heart. The climb made me realize that anything is possible and that you are never alone."
Rebecca KILI

Judy: "Toughest thing mentally and physically I've ever done by far".
JudyTaylor KILI

It is rare to know one person in your lifetime who has climbed Kilimanjaro but to have two people, plus one daughter, from our AMP team, says something pretty special about our crew. I am proud of the company we keep. Congratulations from the rest of us at sea level.

The American Mural Project is a three-dimensional painting so large that a
special building is being created for it. It is a celebration of American ingenuity
and commitment to work. The project seeks to inspire, to invite collaboration,
and to reveal to people of all ages the many contributions they can make to
American culture.  It is intended as a tribute and a challenge.
