Foot Care Myths Revealed

Myth: I can't get skin cancer on my feet.

Reality: Skin cancers can occur anywhere on the body, regardless of sun exposure. Foot and ankle surgeons recommend routine foot self exams to spot suspicious moles, freckles and other spots on your feet that show the signs of melanoma.

Myth: Duct tape can remove a plantar wart.

Reality: Although there are many folk remedies for warts, you should be aware that these remain unproven and may be dangerous. Never try to remove a wart yourself; this can do more harm than good.

Myth: Putting cotton under an ingrown toenail will relieve the pain.

Reality: Cotton placed under the nail can be harmful. It can easily harbor bacteria and encourage infection.

Myth: A doctor can't fix a broken toe.

Reality:
Broken toes that aren't treated correctly can  make walking and wearing shoes difficult. A foot and ankle surgeon will x-ray the toe to learn more about the fracture. If the broken toe is out of alignment, the surgeon may have to insert a pin, screw or plate to reposition the bone.

Al with his inventionZ-CoiL Inventor Al Gallegos Turns 80!
Celebrating a Wonderful Life

Just like the springy shoes he invented, Al is one-of-a-kind, full of positive energy, warmth and support. In spite of a hard road, he has always bounced back and always helps to change people's lives for the better. Alvaro Z. Gallegos turns 80 years old on March 14th, and we hope you'll join us in wishing him the happiest of birthdays!

1931. Born in Del Norte, Colorado, Al works on the family farm until going to Regis College in Denver.

1951. He joins the USAF and becomes a test and fighter pilot.

1958. Al begins his entrepreneurial career by opening a department store in northern New Mexico, followed in time by other retail stores, a restaurant, and a real estate business.

1960. He marries Marcella Lopez and they proceed to have 8 children.

1980. Marcella passes away suddenly, leaving Al to cope as a single father. He takes up long-distance running to stay healthy for his kids.

1985. Al dreams of a springy, yet supportive shoe that might ease the aches and pains he suffers as a runner. Years of experimentation follow.

1996. Supplied with a small inventory of his patented, shock-absorbing Z-CoiL shoes, Al opens the first Z-CoiL store in Albuquerque.

2000. Al experiences another major blow when his youngest son, Tomas, is killed in a bicycle accident. The Z-CoiL Footwear company, on the other hand, is thriving. Its distributor network expands rapidly across the country, comprising mostly Z-CoiL customers who have become true believers.

Today, Al is still actively involved in the Z-CoiL business as a footwear designer and Chairman of the Board, and he continues to seek out simple, common-sense solutions to everyday health problems like arthritis and joint pain. And yes, Al still runs nearly every day!

great posture!

 Poised for Good Health

Human beings are made to stand tall. We are naturally equipped with all the bones, muscles and ligaments necessary to maintain a healthy balance that helps us to stand, walk, sit and lie in positions that cause very little stress to our bodies. Poor posture is nothing more than a bad habit that we need to break in order to avoid pain, injury, and fatigue in all our supporting muscles and joints.

Fortunately, it's never too late to improve your posture with a little conscious effort. Here are a few simple steps you can take to feel poised to take on the world:

  1. Get up and move. As muscles tire, you're more likely to slouch, and this puts extra pressure on the neck and back. In order to maintain a relaxed, yet supported posture, change positions frequently. Try taking a break from sitting for two minutes every half hour in order to stretch, stand, or walk.
  2. Keep your body in alignment. While standing, distribute your body weight evenly to the front, back, and sides of your feet. While sitting, sit up straight and align your ears, shoulders and hips in one vertical line. Avoid unbalanced postures such as crossing your legs, leaning to one side, hunching your shoulders, or tilting your head.
  3. Strengthen your core. Core strenghtening exercises are most effective when the torso works as a single unit and both front and back muscles contract at the same time. Try these core exercises from the Mayo Clinic!
  4. Wear supportive footwear. Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes, which can throw off your center of gravity. Look instead for shoes or inserts that provide proper arch support, which assists the body's natural alignment.
  5. Z-CoiL footwear's built-in orthotic improves your posture.Stay relaxed and mobile. If you're in pain, it's natural to want to limit your movement, but it is important to maintain a relaxed posture to avoid triggering a downward spiral of pain and stiffness.

Though you may never be called upon to carry things on top of your head, cultivating good posture will not only protect you from injury, but can do wonders for your breathing, flexibility and balance, and make you look and feel more poised and confident!

Z-CoiL Freedom in Sky Blue/WhiteCustomer Testimonial

I purchased my first pair of Z-CoiL shoes last May in Freeport, Illinois. My body is riddled with arthritis and I have always had problems with my feet. The first thing I noticed was feeling planted, and my body straightening up as though I had a string at the top of my head, with no pain in my feet or legs. I could walk without staggering or losing my balance.  And best of all was a good night's sleep with no tossing and turning because of leg pain. Z-CoiL shoes are the greatest shoes ever made!  They were so helpful at the store that I just ordered another pair.
