As coaches, we are all striving to be the best we can be, to ensure that we are giving our clients a strong Solution Focused approach to achieving their ultimate goals. The International Coach Federation credentials are part of our commitment to our clients. These credentials speak for us, they assure our clients that they are working with a practiced, proven and expert coach. These credentials support professionalism in the coaching community by creating benchmarks to meet and exceed. These credentials also serve as an inspiration to us-the commitment to maintain these qualifications requires the upkeep of our own practice. By seeking the title of Associate Certified Coach, Professional Certified Coach or Master Certified Coach, we are making a promise to ourselves to continue our own growth as coaches, to continue to educate ourselves and attain greater heights of understanding, greater opportunities for ourselves, and ultimately achieve greater impact on the world.

This is why the renewal process of the ICF credentialing system is of such great value for coaches. In order to renew your ICF credentials, be they ACC, PCC or MCC, you are required to have 40 Continuing Coaching Education Units every three years. This is an opportunity for you to expand your practice in new, interesting directions, through the attainment of these units.

Erickson College provides a number of ICF CCE approved courses which can count towards your CCEU goal. This summer, we are excited to host a number of them among our summer series of personal development courses. We are also excited to be hosting other, non-CCE courses within this series for coaches and individuals seeking to make deeply personal achievements. Please take a moment to read about our summer offerings:

"Effective Enrollment Conversations"
By Teresia LaRocque, MCC
teresiaHello fellow coaches,

Hope you are having a wonderful summer. So far mine has been a bit of a blur as we welcome the new addition to our family our son, Kenneth LaRocque Terada. Visit my blog to meet Kenny and read the thoughts of a new gushing mom! :) www.teresiasblog.com

As I transition into motherhood, I continue to hold the vision for you to continue to take the necessary steps to build a profitable business this summer. As I promised last month I am sharing with you the most critical strategies to increase your bottom line.

When I first started my coaching business, I immediately realized the power of an effective "complimentary coaching session".  I launched my own coaching practice in January of 1996 and within 3 months I grew my practice from $800 to $3,000 per month. The reason I was able to get these results in such a short period of time was that I took the time to master an effective enrolment conversation.  Over the years I have fined tuned this process and created a system that supports coaches to shift their perspective on "selling" and attract more paying clients.

Is the complimentary session a big part of your business building strategy? If not, I encourage you to make it so.  What is your relationship with facilitating a complimentary session? Do you enjoy it? Do you resist them?

Facilitating a complimentary session is an opportunity to really connect with and support the client to get really clear about what they want, and inspire them to the possibilities of their life. It is not selling, it is doing what we love most - helping individuals commit and take action to the possibilities of their life. You can have fun with your complimentary sessions and have it be a powerful business building activity. Offering a complimentary session is on of the most effective ways to begin a professional relationship.

Here are some key points to keep in mind when facilitating effective complimentary sessions:

The objectives of a complimentary session are:
·    To allow a prospect to experience coaching and your coaching style
·    For you to see exactly where the prospect is in their life
·    For you both to decide if working with you as their coach is their next best step

A powerful complimentary session includes three sections:
1. Preframe - this where you guide the client to prepare for the session and clearly state the purpose of the session
2. Body of the complimentary session - this is all about the client - what are their needs? What do they really want to have happen in their life? What change do they want that is priceless?
3. Invitation - if you feel it is a good fit and the prospects commitment is high ask for the financial commitment (I know, I know, this can be a little nerve wrecking - but what I know for sure when you follow the process up front of delivering an effective complimentary session - asking for the financial commitment is effortless- honestly! :)

Here are some of the most common mistakes that coaches make
·    Making the complimentary session about the coach and their products and services and not an actual coaching "discovery" session
·    Proceeding into a complimentary session immediately after answering a number of questions about coaching and without giving the client time to prepare for the session
·    Not asking for the business/financial commitment

Take some time and go over your process of delivering a complimentary session. Are you getting the results you want? Do you need to tighten it up? Taking the time to master your complimentary session will not only save you time, increase your bottom line but also increase your confidence as a coach and business owner.

TLC Coaches Challenge: For those of you who want to take huge leaps my challenge to you is to book at least 6 complimentary sessions per week for a month. This will create a lot of momentum. Work with your coach, a success buddy, or a fellow coach to hold you accountable in booking your complimentary sessions. Remember, you can make a difference in someone's life by one complimentary session experience. Enjoy the journey!

"The 12 Must-Have Characteristics of a Powerful Question" by Rae T. Chois, MCC

Questions are the Answer!

Have you ever found yourself totally frustrated trying to communicate with a person because they were stuck in the past story line, stuck in excuses and justifications? What if you were able to support them in these challenging and often painful moments to open the door to new ideas and solutions? What if you could powerfully move them out of negative spinning and vicious circle judgements to awaken their best, more expanded thinking, and support them toward empowering resolution? Would this interest you? That is exactly what we will cover in this article.

Whether you are a coach, a manager, a parent etc., your life will greatly benefit from learning how to design and phrase powerful questions that elicit the best from yourself and those around you.

The following are the main characteristics of powerful and effective solution focused questions.

Powerful Questions:

1. Are based in genuine caring and a sincere desire to learn to support the person gets what he or she wants.
2. Are asked with warmth and softened with rapport building techniques so the person feels honoured, cared about, trusting and trusted.
3. Are designed to move the person towards what they desire, not to look backward to explain or justify the past choices and action.
4. Support learning and growth by awakening resourcefulness, not triggering defensiveness.
5. Are clear, clean and concise (i.e. usually fewer words create a more powerful question) and worded in such a way as to awaken the genius within.
6. Create clarity of purpose and direction.
7. Support congruency and personal alignment with values.
8. Develop focus and clarity, leading towards a state of passionate commitment.
9. Empower and design effective decisions.
10. Look from multiple perspectives to give the person wisdom in seeing the bigger picture, thus illuminating and drawing out how to move forward.
11. Assist more comprehensive, systemic thinking.
12. Are often followed with silence and space so the person has the opportunity to think through the provocative question. Silence also shows that you are genuinely interested in listening and care about them enough to give them space to think.

Overall, powerful questions are focused on supporting the person to be the sort of person they really want to be and to create what they really want. Such questions are powerful because they evoke clarity, intention, value, deeper meaning, realizations, understanding, connection, commitment, and action within the person that allows for clear choices.

As you consider this list of the characteristics of powerful questions, how might you begin to rephrase the questions you ask in your life?
Whether you ask these questions of yourself, your friends, your family, or in your workplace, how might designing powerful questions to transform your current personal and professional relationships?

I invite you to take a moment now, and design a list of powerful question that includes most of the above characteristics. Get creative! Have fun with it!
Once you have your list of questions perhaps ask yourself, "What might be some of the ways to use these power questions even more effectively in my life? And how else? And how else?"

To learn more about powerful questions and transformational conversations, please read "The Art & Science of Coaching" book series by Marilyn Atkinson and Rae T. Chois, or attend Erickson College's coach training programs.
" A Coaching Culture Transformation" by Paul Gossen, PCC
Paul GossenPaul Gossen, the Breakthrough Coach, has spent 30 years as a successful serial entrepreneur and business leadership innovator, producing high impact results in corporate coaching, team productivity and organizational transformation. Here he presents for us a case study of how truly revolutionary corporate coaching can be.

What would a true organizational coaching culture actually look like? As coaches and human resource professionals we often love to imagine a theoretical organization where "everyone is a coach and has a coach". But how would this actually work? Welcome to Coastal Community Credit Union. While no organization could ever live up to this absolute ideal, the coaching culture transformation of Coastal is an authentic demonstration of what can be accomplished with a dedicated team in a small organization with the right fundamentals.

But how does a champion of organizational change begin? Why do many corporations that conduct managerial coach training see little significant change? At Coastal, an accredited Manager as Coach training, based on the ICF coaching competencies was the foundation. Building a true transformational shift into this training experience was key.

Are real coaching conversations actually taking place? We all know it takes time to shift old habits.  Having more that 10% of Coastal's 650 staff participate, created a saturated learning environment that reinforced the coaching message. A comprehensive follow-up program supported the early adopting managers to dialogue their success until the benefits of the managerial coaching process became self-evident.

Is coaching really an organizational priority?  Any cultural shift will quickly lose momentum if it is fighting against the overall current. Coastal's early success with managerial coaching would have faded if it had not been well integrated with the overall strategy, performance management systems and leadership initiatives. Managerial success stories supported the coaching message to become the organizational theme of the year.  This cycle of unstoppable momentum inspired 6 more coaching programs in 2009 resulting in a true tipping point.

"In the week after the program I became very aware of my pattern for
being the boss. It was difficult to keep remembering to ask for permission rather than just tell people what to do. My team was very busy and it was difficult to set-up conversations. I decided to take-on asking 5 open-ended questions every day. It worked. I found myself in dozens of on-the-fly
coaching conversations. Everything grew from there. There is now a whole
new level of energy in my team."

Dell Thomson, Associate Vice President, Retail

Coastal has a long history of a caring and employee focused organizational culture. This employee-focused strength was an important foundation for the coaching program. However it was also sometimes seen as a barrier to creating a high-performance culture. When employees deeply care about one another, sometimes there is a hesitancy to say something to a colleague that might hurt their feelings. Enabling authentic "coaching conversations" was a critical driver to creating a high-performance culture where employees are coached to be the best they can be.

In the first month after taking the Manager as Coach, I enrolled all of my
team leaders into having Manager as Coach conversations. It was
challenging to find the time and to remember to keep asking for permission first. However it kept getting easier as we kept asking questions. In the
first 90 days my team had 110 coaching conversations. My team is now a shining example of what is possible from this work."

Shawna McPhillips, Branch Manager
