| "The Significant Power of Promising"
by Marilyn Atkinson, PhD |
A key area in which transformational conversations have great power is with the clarifying of an inner promise. People sometimes hide out from their inner development with holding patterns, fears, and inward lies based on an old 'conclusion'. The Universe comes along and pokes a hole in the façade, often with sickness or crisis.
A strong coach can be a catalyst for renewal, assisting a person to glimpse, and then explore their strongest values and vision that can once again become a lighthouse to life development.
What if I told you that you affect reality at the quantum level when you promise? Would you listen? What if I said that until you promise, the unknown could turn out any which way? With a promise you significantly lean into the magic of reality-making.
Note what quantum means; an indivisible entity of energy. In the realm of all possible alternatives the universe has its random quality. However, when we truly promise a significant result, we can readily observe the universe responding to our request.
Did you know that the observer makes all the difference with quantum choices? Coach position is important with our choices. We need to overview them. It all looks like discovery, yet what we look for tends to be what we actually find. This can be seen in cancer survivors whose bodies suddenly shrink a tumor to nothing and dispel it. What is interesting is that they can always describe a 'significant moment of true promising' somewhere before the discovery and the remission. Re-mission is exactly that! We promise to engage with a mission of value and we re-mission.
One woman in a seminar I was teaching reported that her doctors had just discovered a large tumor in her liver, and believed it was inoperable cancer. She did a vision walk where she described a high wall between herself and her values. She stopped in the middle of the process and physically sagged. She sighed. "What if you climb over the wall?" I asked. "Or go around it?" "It stretches forever like the Great Wall of China," she said, "and it's as high as the Grand Canyon." "Are you climbing it now?" I asked, engaging her in the process. She nodded. "It's very high; too high". "What possibility, what choice will make climbing over this wall easier?" I asked. "That I use my life for something useful." She muttered. She paused for a minute, and then softly said: "But I don't know what." "Can you promise that anyway?" I asked. "Is it worth it? What if this time you really find the true purpose for your life?" She nodded, and bit her lip; then suddenly started to physically change and relax. "I did promise," she said. The furrow departed from her brow and she straightened and stretched. "I'm reaching the top of the wall." She said. "It is easier, and on the other side is a lot of light. Now I'm over. I've really got a vision." For five minutes she stood radiant in her inner awareness. Later she discussed the experience as a breakthrough. She didn't know what it meant yet; she was waiting to discover what was next.
One key for a person to move forward is to speak their promise to life with presence and authority. That means that a coach needs to truly ask, and ask powerfully, for the person to find what is truly authentic and real for them, and to head directly towards it.
What truth needs to be revealed that clarifies purpose and authentic evolutionary aims? What is the true meaning of this person's life, and how can they get on track with their purpose?
For some people, discovering the power of promising provides a turning point in life of real magnitude. Promising significantly raises your capacity for making something real. Discovering this power allows you to begin to make choices as if they really matter in the Universe.
We can ask the question: "Can you promise this?" This is a great question when a person reveals their inner aim, and then speaks their promise to themselves. Life flows towards an authentic promise given to an empowered vision.

Setting the Focus for Transformational Coaching by Marilyn Atkinson, PhD & Rae T. Chois, MCC |
A verbal contract or coaching focus is a powerful beginning, like an archer pulling back the bow of attention with a strong arm. The aim of our intention sets the focus, and the contract is the mental picture of where the arrow will go. An effective contract is the arm of intention. Through the conversation, this arm sends the arrow forth and the deeper knowing mind responds by opening up the creativity bank with a flow of ideas. You cannot have a transformational conversation where there is integral change without such a clear focus for the conversation.
Using the Contracting Question When you use a contracting question to focus a conversation, the client can consistently check the value of the conversation to see if he or she is on track. To establish a contract well, we need to contract both for the focused energy and focused timeframe of our client. To set a strong contract, you might say something like the following: "What is the best possible result you would get from our 45 minutes together?" or"We have 25 minutes together today. What do you believe would be the most important thing to achieve today?"
Notice that each contract specifies the time range and requests the goal range by asking for the best possible result. The client holds the frame for what they produce, and they know the name of the game. They are responsible to step up and create results within their control, while you, the coach, hold the space for them.
Five Criteria of a Good ContractWhen the client answers your contracting question and states what he or she wants from the coaching session, you want to listen for the response sounding something like the following: · Stated in the positive: "I want..." · Within the person's control to do something about. · Truly meaningful and important to the person at the deepest level. · Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic/relevant, and timed for completion (SMART goals). · Clear how the coach and client will know when the outcome is achieved. This means the coach and client are clear on the evidence procedure, that is, they both understand what the client will see, hear, and feel at the end of the coaching session that demonstrates that the outcome was achieved.
If you notice that a contract is missing a few of these elements, ask powerful questions that support revealing these items. Here are a few sample questions that can achieve this: · So you don't want to fight with your husband. What do you want? · What do you want from your relationship with your husband that is within your control? · On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is improving your relationship with your husband right now? What value will this have in your life? Why is it so important? · What specifically do you want to achieve in this area in the next 30 minutes? · What would you walk away with today that proved you had made an inner shift to approach your marriage in a new way? If you are using these skills as a coach, as a manager (one on one, or in a group setting such as a team meeting) or in an intimate relationship, getting a clear contract with the above mentioned characteristics will move the conversation into deep rapport and flow, thus allowing transformation to happen. Now that you have this skill, how might your next transformational conversation go? What will be different about this conversation at the core level? Are You Going for Gold? By Teresia LaRocque, MCC |
"What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals." ~ Goethe Hello fellow coaches, I don't know about you but I have been inspired by the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. It doesn't hurt that I live in the city that hosted them; Canada had a story book finish with Canada winning hockey gold and scoring Olympic record of 14 gold medals. To top it all off I was at the closing ceremonies. It also brings back many great memories of my competitive years as a figure skater. But it goes deeper then that. The Olympics uncover some key factors that are important for all of us who are committed to making a difference and building a successful business. Firstly, on a social level, the Olympics highlight the power of "we". Nelson Mandela once said "politics divide, sports unite". Sports encourage leadership, the development of social skills, learning how to manage a stressful situation and most importantly, teaching that personal sacrifices in service of the group, often brings greater rewards than simple self interest. As an entrepreneur, it is important we do not do the entrepreneur journey alone, there is an experience of we that is available to all of us, and it is up to us to create it. I have heard from many who have watched the athletes step up to their long desired dream of competing in the Olympics, that it has brought tears to their eyes. We are reminded of what is possible in our own life. The Olympics remind us of the rewards of courage, self discipline and belief in oneself. Throughout the many years of coaching other business owners and coaches I have found that these qualities are absolutely critical to embrace to take our passion of coaching and make it into a profitable business. They are worth exploring further. Courage: I once heard courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyways - how true! Courage is needed when you have a sense of what you hope to achieve but there is no guarantee - in other words there is a level of risk involved. This is necessary when building a business. Acting in spite of the risk often brings up less than comfortable feelings, feelings such as fear, self doubt, uncertainty, and discomfort. I was very inspired from a Passion into Profit participant when I requested at the end of training call "this week is about stretching out of your comfort zone and taking bold steps to build your business" he responded "Teresia, since I have decided to be a coach I have been out of my comfort zone" - this is a good thing! What drives one to act in spite of the uncomfortable feelings? Simply put-values. When you have a strong belief about the right thing to do, or what is important to you, you're often compelled to act. At the end of the day the question is: are you letting your fear guide you or your desire to act on what is most important to you? Living a life where you are consistently stretching out of your comfort zone and accessing your inner courage, not only builds self confidence but it is critical to build a successful coaching business. Self-discipline: Most people don't associate discipline with happiness, but did you know the most joy you'll ever know comes from areas where you are self-disciplined? People who have significant and successful businesses can often point back to a time that required much effort and self-discipline. They often say it was worth every ounce of effort. Becoming self-disciplined is never easy in the beginning, but once you overcome a barrier and make a decision to become disciplined, it gets easier. I often tell my clients self-discipline is doing the things you don't necessarily want to do, but you know by doing them, they will help you get the results you want. I support my clients in designing their life around doing what they love and what they are good at - when we do this the amount of self-discipline is minimal AND to really live a life we love there will always be areas where we need to embrace the act of self-discipline. Simple put self-discipline is about the ability to reject immediate satisfaction, in order to gain something better, but requires effort and time. Decide today where in your business you would benefit greatly if you were to become more self-disciplined. Where do you want more or better results? Start today by saying "no" to immediate satisfaction and start implementing that extra effort to create more of what you really want in your life. Belief in oneself: We have all heard it at one time in our lives "you have to believe in yourself." Believing in oneself is one of the first steps to success. If you don't have confidence in yourself, it will be difficult to succeed in anything. Every day all of us face challenges in our business, some small, small big, it is how we respond to it them that makes the difference. Whatever your vision is for your coaching business, hold onto it, and take one step at a time. When you feel the fear and act anyway (courage), and make self-discipline a part of your life, this builds the muscle of belief in yourself. My question to you: Are you taking steps daily where you are accessing your inner courage? Do your business goals requires self-discipline and faith in oneself daily? A successful business requires the attitude and commitment of an athlete. Is this your year to go for gold?
