| "The Decade of Abundance, and The Season of Love and Care"
by Marilyn Atkinson, PhD |
Here in the last weeks of December 2009, the season of Love and Care, I have been reflecting on the whole decade... for Erickson. This has been a decade of Abundance for Erickson International. And, as 2009 comes to a close with this holiday season I am reflecting on what has been for me a ten-year long celebration of new Solution Focused Coaches.... Many of them! For example, about 1500 new Erickson Coaches completed a certification program only this year. As the year wraps up, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for your participation in Erickson's programs throughout this last decade.
With you, Erickson has evolved and grown to where it is today - The world's leading Solution Focused Coaching program. I'm proud to say that in 2009 Erickson has supported the growth of many new language groups using these wonderful methodologies with strong coaching cultures ...world-wide. We have encouraged the development of multiple ICF chapters as well. By the end of 2009 the Art and Science of Coaching program has been translated into Norwegian, Portuguese, French, Turkish, Russian, Latvian, Czech, Slovakian, Serbian, Mandarin and Korean ...with Italian and more emerging this upcoming year. Our books are now printed in 6 languages...
Friends, my personal journey since last January has included the writing of a new book, The Art and Science of Four Quadrant Thinking, which I hope will be out by July of this year. Physically, even just this past year, my journey has taken me into 20 countries and forty cities where I have met many of you. I have participated in the development of new programs which you will see in coming years. Our trainers training program is thriving on three continents, with multiple new trainers emerging.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. As value focused Coaches we are assisting our clients to recognize and honour the huge abundance of our lives. It is especially useful to stop and recognize the multiple areas of that abundance.
Here is a small meditation and exercise for you from me, to take a moment of blessing to truly experience your own arena of celebration:
The Two Minute Abundance Blessing: First sweep your attention through multiple areas of abundance in your life:
Physical Abundance: Our physiology is an abundance system. It allows us keen awareness of all the multiple smells, tastes, feelings, sounds and visions of our experiential life. The body is an amazing pleasure system. We can open up this abundance like a picnic basket on a summer's day. Take a moment to pause and experience this.
Intentional/Futures Abundance: What a wonderful thing is choice, and the ability to conceptualize, outline, enrich, and widen our choices into an abundant life. Take a moment to pause and to deeply appreciate your own creative intentions in the world.
Values Abundance: When we listen to and play the tones of our heart, expressing in the harmonies of this moment's awareness and all our shades of meaning in value words, then the sweetness of life becomes ever more apparent. Take a moment and appreciate the power of Love in your life.
Spiritual Abundance: To notice that the deeper meanings ever emerging from our lives truly enriches others in an ongoing way, allows yourself to view this "unfolding " like a flow of possibility that continues to spiral outward. Such visualization gives a wonderful perspective on the wholeness of life itself, a perspective that is rich and satisfying. Take a moment to experience the amazing and wonderful depth of your spiritual life.
A Small Exercise: For a moment stand in the center of all areas, the four quadrants of abundance, and totally feel the abundance of your life. Bring all past and future into the sweetness of this moment's awareness. As if you were a powerful archer, place your arrow of this deep 'recognition of abundance' close to your heart, and fix it in your bow. Now imagine shooting a bright arrow of this value far into your future, and the future for all humanity, a gift of realization for all eternity. Enjoy the moment and its blessing!

"Gifting Yourself & Your Client's with an Expanded Coach Position" By Rae T. Chois, MCC
|
Have you ever been in a challenging conversation that is spinning around and around wishing you could take an expanded perspective? Learning to take an expanded perspective in the moment is especially meaningful as we enter into the holiday season with friends and family that have the potential of triggering old and undesirable patterns of communication, don't ya think? In this article I will impart one of the most important fundamentals of a transformational conversation. In fact, what is shared with you here is so significant, that it is impossible to ever have a truly deep, meaningful and transformational conversation without it. Consider this: have you ever been in a situation where you just felt completely in the moment now, all senses alive, and keenly aware of a larger global perspective? Perhaps you experienced this while you were in meditation, on a mountaintop watching the world, in your favourite park, or perhaps you were just watching your favourite sports team from the skybox. Either way, you had a beautiful expanded perspective on whatever was happening. Perhaps you even felt a joyful detachment. Allow yourself to be immersed in this experience again. Notice what was going on for you inside and outside. What were your feelings? Your thoughts? What was happening in the outside world? Who were you being when you allowed this experience? Even if you haven't experienced this before, maybe you could pretend just for a moment that you are experiencing it right now. Imagine yourself on the mountaintop watching the world. Allow the noticing to take place, allow it from a witnessing place within yourself. Are you feeling it? In coaching lingo, this is what we call Coach Position. One may also refer to it as a Zen Detached Witness Posture. Regardless of what we call it, it is the essence of what it is that is important. This is the first and most fundamental way of being that all coaches are taught. When coaching someone, it is critical to be in this expanded Coach Position so that you can see all parts and perspectives of the person's life. Coach Position might be described as being the pivotal gear in an amazingly beautiful, complex, and precise instrument made up of many moving parts. This Coach Position "gear" is central to observing the mechanism in action. From the inside, it organizes the capacity for all parts and perspectives of the system to be beneficial and to work in harmony. From the outside, it offers a broadened perspective and the awareness of interconnectedness. From Coach Position, a good coach sees life unfolding for the client as much more than the sum of its parts. When a person being coached is awakened to the fact that that there is no single absolute perspective in any situation, they are free to expand their awareness from many perspectives, thus allowing true transformation to happen in their lives. Consider where in your life this awareness of Coach Position will serve you and your relationships. Allow yourself to play out in your mind how you will react differently to the circumstances in life now that you have this tool. How will being the Witness with an expanded perspective change the way you approach the next conversation you have? How will taking a Coach Position on your own life, thoughts and feelings, make a difference? Try it this holiday season. Gifting yourself and your client's with an expanded Coach Position is the gift of true transformation. "Reflect Back and Celebrate Your Year!" By Teresia LaRocque, MCC
|
On November 6th as I was out doing some errands, I had to shake my head as it dawned on me that in the background was Christmas music. I swear each year the Christmas season starts earlier and earlier. After my first reaction "is this not a little early"? I immediately had a smile on my face as the Christmas season highlights some of my most important values: sharing and connection. I love this time of year!
During this time of year, we're all focused on rituals for the holidays. Decorations are the momentos we bring out every year to set our holiday spirit. Many people have rituals such as going to see the Christmas lights, a Christmas or childrens recitals. Rituals play a key role in our lives, especially during the holiday season. This year, (if you celebrate Christmas or not) I recommend you add another ritual: take some time to close out 2009 and open the door to 2010. If you have been part of my community in the past you know that a year has not passed where I do not encourage this ritual.
In our fast-paced lives, as we begin to approach a new year we have a tendency to start thinking about "what's next" long before we wrap up what we're currently working on. While this can be a strategic way to keep things moving, it can also rob us of the opportunity to reap the full rewards of the journey we've been on. There is great richness and depth to be found when you take time to really look at your recent experiences.
Some of the greatest gifts we can give others are the "gift of time" and the "gift of acknowledgement".
What if this holiday season you gave yourself the above gifts? What if you set a special date with yourself to reflect, acknowledge and celebrate all that 2009 brought to your life? Take time to look back and see how far you've come. Honor the progress you've made in 2009, the goals you met, even the challenges you encountered along the way, and sift through it all to find the lessons learned. These bits and pieces can add up to tremendous realizations that will help you launch into the year to come.
Acknowledging yourself and appreciating your growth process is a core component of enjoying life. Stepping back helps us see the bigger picture and maintain perspective on what we want, where we're going, and how we want to get there.
Grab your journal, a friend, or your partner and take some time to consider these questions to guide you in reviewing the previous year and setting yourself up for a spectacular 2010.
What were your greatest successes? Think of the most important areas of your life what are you most proud of or what have you accomplished in each area? Did you meet or exceed your financial goals? Did you accomplish a near impossible work project? Did you take a vacation to a country you had always wanted to visit?
Remember to celebrate! What will you do in the next 30 days to acknowledge your successes? How have you evolved? Who have you become? Are you more loving? More patient? Were you more courageous, adventuress, in 2009?
Coaches tip: Who we become is much more powerful then what we accomplish...
What are you most grateful for in 2009? This time of year is a great time to count our blessings and be thankful for what we have in our life. What is on your gratitude list? What were the five most important lessons you learned this year? What do you know now that you didn't know as you entered 2009? These lessons can be the result of good or bad things happening. Use your "lessons learned" to accentuate the positive and avoid the negative as you focus on 2010.
What important things do you want to accomplish or change about your life during 2010? Take sometime to brainstorm; write whatever comes to your mind. Then prioritize.
What items on your list could be accomplished more easily with the help of other people? Identify three people who can help you with each accomplishment or the changes you'd like to make. Write down their names along with a deadline to contact them. Know very precisely how you would like them to help you. Enlisting the help of others can be a powerful way to make things happen. You do not have to do it alone!
Who are the people in your life that have made the biggest difference to you this past year? Make a list of who has played a pivotal role in your life. How could you show them your appreciation? A few years ago, as a gift to the people closest to me I gave them a list of 25 reasons (25 days of Christmas) why I loved and appreciated them. A gift from the heart goes a long way.............
Ask yourself, honestly, what could you do that would bring more joy into your daily life and what do you need to do to get that started? Make a list and keep it where you will be reminded daily of how you can bring more joy in to your life. Remember the simplest things in life can bring us the most joy.
May you have a joyous and fulfilling holiday Season.
Your catalyst in living your best life.
