Your Coaching Journey
|
If you want to coach others, then first assess your client life satisfaction. It is fascinating to consider how each of us finds a path in life that we travel year after year that may (or may not) support us in living a life of passion, fulfillment, and significance in the way we would like. As you engage your coaching journey, take a few moments for some useful self-assessment. Ask yourself, "How satisfying, fulfilling, and rewarding is the path I travel? How many mysteries do I discover each day?"
PONDERINGS FOR PLAYING THE MASTER'S GAME Your Passion, Purpose or Calling?
How much do you consider the sort of person you are being in every moment? How powerfully do you show up every day? Are you being your authentic self? Are you aware of the conscious or unconscious values and beliefs guiding you as you choose your thoughts and actions? Do you clearly assess how well they work or don't work? If life is a game, how are you currently playing it? Do you have a passionate purpose, a calling?
Are You Living It Fully? How often are you focusing your mind on being who you want to be, doing what truly inspires you, or experiencing the results that you know you can produce? How much do you daily actions align with who you really are? How much do you fully engage and enjoy each moment, no matter where you are or what you are doing? Whatever your life looks like for you, the answers to these questions define how powerfully you play the game of life. In turn, this has an impact on how much you have to offer other people as a transformational communicator.
Enjoy pondering these questions. They will add greatly to your vision and commitment as a coach.
Take time for yourself this time of year as life emerges all around. Take time for coaching and for being coached.

Up-level Your Game! Open Ended practice - a Relevant Pursuit: a simple exercise for you from Marilyn Atkinson
|
As I listen to and mentor coaches, I once again become aware of the huge value of tape listening in up-leveling our game. For people with former careers as consultants, counselors, teachers, directors, etc., the habits of telling, leading and stating choices have become deeply embedded. If this has been your background consider the following, as a practice, even if only once per month:
- Get a client tape and listen to it with another coach (or even just alone). - Listen to all questions and score for open-ended. Carefully study for degree of open-ended and how it could be even stronger. - Notice if there are any leading questions where in fact you "pull for" a specific answer. - Scare your "open curiosity" level from one to ten. - Scale your warmth from one to ten. - Notice your wrap-up: were you eager to say good-bye and move on, or did you pause to genuinely acknowledge your client? Ask: Where could i up-level my game?

The First Step to Advanced
Coaching: Expanding your Coach Position! by Rae T. Chois, MCC |
If
you are a Solution Focused Coach, you will recognize Coach Position is
a neutral, detached and non-judgmental perspective. You will be at
ease as a casual observer in the transformational power and process of
any conversation. Entering a wide expanded posture supports you, as
coach, in listening deeply and asking the very best questions to
inspire and awaken the best in the client.
In what you might
call this 'Zen detached' witness posture, you can see the person you
are connected with as the magnificent creator of his or her life. You
will engage in powerful questions and presence to support the client to
create his or her own awareness
With this as our foundation...let's go further.
Will
you play with me for a minute? If you know the work of Robert
Schienfeld, you will recognize this metaphor and see that I am using it
in a different way.
Okay, just for fun, let's pretend we are
all players on the field in The Human Game. Of course, as players, on
the field, we are all doing our very best to live our highest purpose
while inspiring and awakening the best in other people. This is who we
are as Solution Focused Coaches.
Of course when we coach
another person, we step off the field of play of our "own life" and
into the stadium of the client's game. We support the client to become
clear on where he or she is right now, and where he or she wants to be.
Okay, for the purpose of learning more about Coach Position, may I ask, "If you watch any game up close, what do you see?"
For
example, pretend you are watching a football game from the front row.
Even if you have not watched a game this close in the past, what are
your expectations of what you will see?
· Perhaps you would see all the detail of what was happening on the field of play, · You may see flying sweat and hear the grunts and groans of the athletes, · You might even see the meanness and viciousness of the aggression of the game.
The
bottom line is: advanced coaching (at the Professional or Master
Certified Coach Level) is not a front row endeavor. Why? Because the
perspective is so limited...
If you are coaching from the
front rows, the support and service to the client will be restricted
because it is so easy for you (as coach) to get pulled into the story
line of what is happening. When you ask questions about the details,
the client and you can easily get caught up in vicious circle of
details. Then you enter the "spin zone" like a cat chasing its tail and
not moving forward.
What is the best stadium coaching row in The Human Game? You actually want to take yourself to the skybox perspective.
The
skybox is the elevated viewing box at any stadium and is often a
furnished luxury area. It is a comfortable place to be and this higher
level viewing allows you to "see and deeply appreciate" the whole of a
client's life. You see the patterns in the field and how they are
executed, and you are not engrossed or snagged by the details. You
create trust with another by stepping away from your own personal ideas
into the wider expanse of curiosity, the person's transformative aims,
here and now. You, as the coach, take "Coach Position" in the skybox
and hold no agenda of the other person. As you do this, the client is
free to open up to a range of useful viewpoints, which offers new
perspective and growth. From this expanded place, the flow of
observation, awareness and true transformation begins.
Stepping
into and holding Coach Position from the skybox means making sense or
creating awareness from the perspective of the whole system. Coach
Position is seeing the whole landscape of a person's life from the
skybox... and perhaps even the skybox beyond the skybox.
Holy Quantum Coach Position Batman! :o)
From Quantum Coach Position, you are listening "as if": · The client is whole, complete and all ready has all the inner resources to be a success, · You are embodying the other Erickson Coaching Principles (as taught in the Art & Science of Coaching) fully.
You
will begin to build the skill set of a Master Certified Coach even if
your accrued hours are way below 2500. It is 100% Guaranteed!
Entering
and exiting Coach Position can be a fun game throughout the day. The
best time to practice is when you find yourself on the playing field
living out a dysfunctional pattern in consciousness. In these times,
become aware, STOP, enter Coach Position, explore awareness in its
totally from this expanded perspective.... and then respond to life.
Try it... See how effective and fun it can be. Life is simple when you
make choices from the skybox.
If you would like more
information on entering and holding a quantum coach position, please
email raechois@ericskon.edu and I will write more on this in the
future.

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF COACHING
"I believe coaching in its truest form is that ability to
hold pure space for the customer without any attempt at judgement or
interference, free from advice giving. Truly a "zen" like attendance only.
Where the processes or tools allow the customer to ride
a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
What an enriched and enlightened discovery, when the
customer creates the very answer he/she seeks, by means of their own imagination
and resourcefulness.
Erickson College fully provides the coach with a
complete package that supports the knowledge required to place every customer in
the driver's seat of self discovery.
Thank you Erickson for standing as a leader in the
coaching field with principles that put the customer first. I applaud your
integrity and am proud to be an Erickson
Graduate."
Mark Marcynuk
"Excellent!
My thoughts have shifted dramatically. I learned to to truly believe in
the infinite possibility of people and the human dynamic."

breakthrough into a comprehensive appreciation of the depth and width of this
work. Much of this means
the questioning and releasing old assumptions.
If you
wish to accelerate your own understanding join Richard Hyams and Heather

with Milton and a wonderful opportunity to witness the
flow and elegance of his mastery with language and client connection.
And... it
was proposed that we initiate scheduling a few evenings where we can work
together as a group to get more acquainted with some of the processes we use in
Solution Focused Coaching (thanks for the suggestion Teresia!). We will schedule
our 1st such get-together
on:
Tuesday July
7th (7:00-9:00, or whenever
we finish).
Please rsvp for this practice evening and send along any
suggestions for the practice for the evening (one or more processes you are
interested in practicing).
Join
