Dear ,
Happy Halloween! I hope you enjoy the fun of the holiday, along with all of its "ghoulish" delights! As a kid, I always looked forward to Halloween because it gave me a chance to express some of my best HSP traits -- creativity and imagination! I loved coming up with homemade costumes and adopting a new "persona" for an evening.
In this issue, you'll learn about the "tricks" your mind plays and how that can silently sabotage your goals. There is also a guest article by Amy McNeil, who invites you to venture into the "spirit world" and ponder life's big questions. Amy recently started the In Spirit web site, a destination for spiritual seekers. I encourage you to check out her site and sign up for her free newsletter. (Amy also designs and edits this newsletter by the way.)
Over the next month, I have scheduled several field trips to mind, body, spirit expos (10/24, 10/25, and 11/1). Since these expos tend to feature "HSP friendly" programs and vendors, I hope that some of you will be motivated to venture out with the group.
On 10/22, I am giving an interview on the BlogTalkRadio podcast. You can listen to the interview live or hear it later on demand. See the sidebar for details.
I am also delighted to introduce a new lavender aromatherapy product line on my web site. Lavender is especially good for highly sensitive people because it has a calming effect on overactive nervous systems. I am offering products that help with headaches, anxiety, and insomnia.

Trick or Treat? Does your mind "trick" you or "treat" you? Do your thoughts and attitude about yourself work for you or against you? It's important to recognize that your thoughts influence your actions, and your actions determine the quality and effectiveness of your life.
For example, you may say to yourself..."I'd love to become an author and teach others the lessons I've learned in life. I have a strong desire to do this. I'm a very good writer, and this is a very realistic goal for me."
You feel exhilarated at first, but then your inner voice decides to play "tricks" on you. You do some HSP deep-thinking and have second thoughts. You may say things like..."I can't do this." "Who would want to read my book?" "People will make fun of me." "Why should anyone listen to me?"
Do these scenarios sound familiar? They certainly do for me. When I decided to write my book, Making Sense of Your High Sensitivity, my inner voice often played "tricks" on me. On the one hand, I was excited about the prospect of becoming an author, but the more I thought about it, the more I convinced myself that I wasn't capable of doing it.
At one point, I even decided to abandon the whole project. However, as time passed, I couldn't get the book off my mind. Deep down, I knew I had something valuable to contribute. After struggling to understand my high sensitivity for so many years, I had finally come to appreciate it for the gift that it can be, and I desperately wanted to share what I knew. The more I thought about it, the more the "treat" part of myself took hold. Suddenly, all I could see was why I had to write the book, which sparked a burning desire to dive in and produce the best book I could.
The change of heart came when my desire to write the book overcame my fear of doing it. Desire over fear, that's the magic formula! However, the only way to arrive at that formula is to observe and question your thought patterns. Just because you think a thought doesn't make it true. For example, I took the thought "Nobody will want to hear what I have to say" and put it to the test. What evidence did I have to support that claim? Since I hadn't written the book or even any articles on the subject, how could I possibly know the truth of that statement?
Many people routinely let their minds "trick" them, which keeps them from getting what they want most. Instead, why not give your "treat" thoughts more of chance? Rather than only focusing on the thoughts that bring you down, validate the positive ones too. In my case, I looked at my desire to help other HSPs and thought of all
the ways I might be able to accomplish that. I realize this can be a challenge, especially since most of us are not conditioned to think positively. However, if you are willing to simply observe and question your thoughts, it is possible to break out of old thought patterns.
Trick or Treat? What are you waiting for? When you conquer the "trick" part of your mindset, you will be "treated" to the life that you dream about. My book materialized because of it. My dream came true, and yours can too. As one of the word's biggest self-doubters, I'm living proof that it is possible to overcome your fears and have whatever you dream about.

Are there spirits among us?
(Guest Article by Amy McNeil, owner of the In Spirit web site)
As Halloween approaches, we are bombarded with ghastly visions of ghosts,
goblins, and spirits from other worlds. Although the mood of the holiday is light and playful, it does touch upon profound questions deeply embedded in the human
psyche: What happens to us when we leave our bodies? Do we become "spirit", and are there spirits around us?
I have always been a "believer" and had a deep knowing that there must
be worlds beyond this one. As a child, I had lots of "imaginary" friends and believed
that angels would always protect me. Growing up as the only girl amongst 3
brothers, my need to feel "protected" was very high!
As a young adult, I
had an experience that would reinforce my belief in protective spirits. I was riding
in a vehicle with several friends. Just as we approached an
intersection, I took my seat belt off to retrieve some music CDs from a
container under the seat. While scanning the CDs, I suddenly heard an urgent
voice in my head shout, "Get out of the way!" Startled, I immediately looked up, and I saw a car barreling towards me at full throttle! With
total calm and complete presence of mind, I instantly dove from the front seat into the
back seat, miraculously escaping the violent impact. Nobody else was hurt
either (except perhaps the person I landed on in the back seat!). After
observing the damage to the passenger side of the vehicle, the responding police
officer couldn't get over how "lucky" I was and said that he had never seen anything
like this in his life. "Somebody upstairs must be looking out for you," he said
as he shook his head in disbelief.
As a teenager, my curiosity about the spirit world unfortunately
led me to experiment with a Oujia Board. Wanting to contact deceased human
spirits, my friends and I took the Ouija Board into a cemetery. Although we made
many "connections" that night, some of them were extremely frightening, and several
spirits warned us to discontinue the activity. Having always been sensitive to "energy",
I remember getting a very heavy sensation in my chest and then actually feeling
energy drain out of my body. I was so haunted by the experience that I later
contacted a member of the clergy, who explained to me the danger of opening "portals"
to the spirit world.
Although these days I stay very far away from Ouija Boards, I
still long to connect to the spiritual realm. While in the past I always
searched outside myself for "connection", I now realize that the only true gateway
lies within. Thus, my new tools of choice are meditation and prayer. At the start
of each day, I offer a prayer of gratitude for all that is good in my life and
ask for guidance in areas where I need help. I then play soothing music and
meditate for about 20 minutes. As
long as I stick to my daily practice, I find that I am rewarded in countless
ways. During my meditations, I often see a kaleidoscope of beautiful colors, receive
insights and inspirations, and feel embraced by a loving presence. Throughout
the day, I sometimes get a gentle tingling at the top of my head, which sends a wave of calm down my spine. To me, this feels like
a loving reminder from above that I am never alone and that I can "connect" to
divine energy any time I want.
Since we are all spiritual beings at our essence, I believe that everyone has the power to connect to the universal consciousness. It doesn't take any special talents, just an open mind and a willingness to "receive" the many gifts of spirit.
