PACIS 2009
by Bernard Tan,
2009-2010 AIS President

The Pacific-Asia Conference on Information Systems (PACIS) was held in Hyderabad, India from July 10 to 12, 2009. For the first time in its 16 year history, PACIS was held in India. About 200 participants (including some from the industry) attended this conference. Council members who were present at PACIS 2009 included President-Elect Joey George, Region 3 representatives Hock-Hai Teo, Peter Seddon, and myself. Over the years, the quality of papers presented at PACIS has improved significantly. I congratulate conference co-chairs Vallabh Sambamurthy and Ravi Bapna, and colleagues from the Indian School of Business, for putting up an excellent conference. PACIS 2010 will be held in Taipei and PACIS 2011 will be held in Brisbane. I encourage colleagues from different parts of the world to attend these conferences.

The Future of Work!
by Pete Tinsley,CAE
AIS Executive Director

If you saw this headline in the newspaper ...

     "Information-Technology sector to swell 24%"

would you:
a) Assume you're reading a really old newspaper;
b) Call the editor to complain about an obvious typo; or
c) Press your snooze alarm and go back to sleep since you're obviously dreaming!

Well in this case it would be none of the above because that's exactly what Time Magazine reported in its May 25, 2009 issue "The Future of Work."  The article by Alex Altman actually states "Over the next seven years, the number of jobs in the information-technology sector is expected to swell 24% - a figure more than twice the overall job-growth rate."    I don't know about you, but I get pretty excited about that.  It's a ray of hope in an otherwise bleak outlook for the IS field lately.  If that's where the jobs are, then can the students who need to take IT Project Management,  Process Innovation, and Fundamentals of Database Management Systems be that far behind?
