Greetings HRMA Members,

Key Strengths of Indian Women as Managers Serves as a Reminder for Managers Worldwide

An article published by the Society for Human Resources Management entitled "Perspectives on Women in Management in India" caught my eye when the article highlighted key strengths of Indian Women as Managers.  The strengths identified serve as reminders for all types of managers to continue to polish their ability: to network with colleagues; to perceive and understand situations; to have a strong sense of dedication, loyalty, and commitment to their organizations; to multitask; to integrate a collaborative work style - solicit input from others with respect to ideas; apply crisis management skills; to share information (interactive leadership style); to deal with sensitivity in relations (e.g., compassionate, empathetic, understanding); and to behave in a gender-neutral manner.  Regardless of our differences, we can all relate to what Indian women professionals state are success factors to a successful career - a good education, mentoring, family support, strong communication skills, and life long learning.

There is much to learn from global leadership for many reasons.  Countries such as India, China, and Brazil are far surpassing the United States in global economic growth - they are obviously doing several things right.  Internet explosion and globalization is intensifying diversity in any organization around the world.  This article recommends a few HR management practices that will enhance a "women-friendly" organization.  The practices suggested may be applied to just about any type of diverse population to include gender, generational differences, socioeconomic status, disability, race, ethnic population, etc.  Recommendations include senior management's commitment to: diversity issues; career development opportunities; exposure of these types of individuals to top management, leadership development; job rotation; recruitment at senior-level positions; regularly survey diverse populations to assess job satisfaction; and establish mentoring programs.

Although these studies are taking place around the world, the key findings apply to us here in New Mexico.  Challenge your current mental model and read about what other countries are learning and experiencing regarding diversity in their organizations.  If this substance intrigues you, I encourage SHRM members to read this article for more information at: http://www.shrm.org/Research/Articles/Articles/Documents/09-0677_India_Women_Ldrshp_FNL.pdf
