From our President

Happy New Year 2011 HRMA Members,

2010, another year of change for our local organizations and around the world!  Let's get off to a fresh start with new beginnings in 2011.  I would like to once again provide a heartfelt thank you to those board members who served in 2010 and a warm welcome to the new board of 2011!  You may read the 2011 HRMA Board Members' outstanding credentials and goals for the year on the HRMA website.

We have a lot of work to do together with HRMA membership that includes you.  Both boards met in October and December of last year to conduct strategic planning for 2011.  The leaders in the room were filled with thoughtful ideas, enthusiasm for improvements, and positive energy looking forward to the future of HRMA.

I encourage every HRMA member to get involved in a committee and make a new year's resolution to find time to give back to the profession of HR.  Help the HRMA Board advance the knowledge of local HR professionals; build networks of local talent; inspire learning in ourselves, each other, and in the organizations we support; drive business success right here in New Mexico; ignite passion in ourselves, each other, and the organizations we service; all while advancing the HR profession.  We can do it if we support and serve each other!

A SHRM article revealed "Results for the first quarter 2011 global Manpower Employment Outlook Survey released by Manpower Inc. Dec. 7, 2010, suggest a more positive start to the New Year's hiring for the global labor market than was seen in 2010."  So let's continue this trend and look forward to the positive possibilities that may occur in 2011 in the field of HR and in our organizations. Furthermore, according to the SHRM 2011 HR Trend Book http://www.shrm.org/publications/hrmagazine/editorialcontent/2010/1210/trendbook/Pages/default.aspx, organizations must prepare for what is next.  The outlook is the recession is technically over, but the pain lingers on; coping with health care reform; strategies for managing costs; executive perks declining; social networking becomes routine recruiting tool; hiring caution continues; skilled trades people in short supply; restructuring compensation plans; shareholders' say on executive pay; 2011 salary increases; managing social media usage; preparing for workforce virtualization; CEO succession planning; Web 2.0 technologies used in training; projected employment change by industry sector; employment by age; temporary employment by region; and much more is on the horizon.  We must know what is next for organizations and assist in the planning and preparation for what comes next.

Brace yourselves, change will continue and with change comes opportunity to grow.  HR is a profession that requires us to be committed to life long learning. With change happening more rapidly than ever, globalization creating intense competition, and technology changing the way we do business, we must be in a constant learning mode to plan and prepare for what is next.  Let's convey thought leadership in our organizations and work together to learn more in 2011!

I look forward to serving and working with you in 2011!

Denise Montoya, MA, SPHR

President, Human Resources Management Association of New Mexico
