LITTLER CONQUERS NEW TERRITORY IN THE SOUTHWEST

Littler Opens Albuquerque, New Mexico Office

San Francisco, CA/ September 29, 2009 -- Littler Mendelson, P.C. (Littler), the nation's largest employment and labor law firm representing management, is proud to announce the opening of its newest office in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This latest addition expands the Firm's presence to 48 offices nationwide and continues to strengthen Littler's presence in the Southwest. Experienced Shareholder Jay Sumner will guide the direction and growth of the new office, working closely with Littler's Phoenix office.

"We are excited to open our new Albuquerque office.  This step will expand our reach and ability to provide counsel to clients in the Southwest on their complex labor and employment issues," said Marko Mrkonich, president and managing director of the Firm. "And we're very pleased with Jay's decision to take on this new role of developing Littler's presence in New Mexico. His depth of knowledge and vast experience in handling the traditional labor needs of clients in various industries, and his focus on exceptional service will form a solid foundation for the growth of this office."

Sumner focuses on traditional labor law, specializing in collective bargaining and handling representation matters for a wide variety of employers. His experience includes addressing positive employment and union-related issues, including collective bargaining, labor arbitrations and election campaigns. Sumner is a member of the Firm's National Labor Relations Practice Group as well as the Health Care and Hospitality Practice Groups. He is one of the leaders of the Littler Governmental Affairs Team and edits Littler's Washington DC Employment Law Update blog. He has represented employers in a wide variety of industries including government contracting, manufacturing, printing, security and corrections, freight transportation, construction and higher education. He received his J.D. from University of Tennessee School of Law and his B.A. from Rhodes College.

The Albuquerque office will also rely on the deep knowledge and skills of two other experienced Shareholders, Fred Miner and Shawn Oller. Miner specializes in collective bargaining negotiations, defense of unfair labor practice charges and has represented numerous employers in administrative proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board. Shawn Oller represents management of both private and public entities in all aspects of labor and employment litigation, with extensive experience defending harassment and discrimination claims. He has represented clients in both federal and state courts in Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico. Both Oller and Miner are admitted into the Arizona and New Mexico state bars.

"I am very excited about this opportunity to open our Albuquerque office and take the first step towards providing New Mexico's employers with quality labor and employment advice," said Jay Sumner. "Our new presence in New Mexico will enable us to not only serve New Mexico clients, but enhance our ability to support our existing Southwest-based clients.

From our President

Dear Valued HRMA Members:

It's the end of October, fall is here and we are quickly approaching the end of calendar 2009! I don't know where the time has gone.
I pleased to let you know that HRMA of New Mexico has been selected as a finalist for SHRM's 2009 Pinnacle Award!  The Board of Directors submitted our strategic alliance project with TeamWorks for consideration and we were chosen as a finalist out of 55 submissions from other chapters and state councils.   The SHRM Pinnacle Award Program sponsored by ADP is an annual recognition program that honors the highest achievement in program development as well as contributions to the advancement of effective human resource management. A total of nine awards will be made: up to seven awards will be presented in the chapter category and up to two awards will be made in the state council category. Each winning affiliate will receive a $1,000 grant and national recognition for outstanding achievement through SHRM publications such as SHRM Online. The actual winners will be announced at the annual SHRM Leadership Conference on November 19th and 20th in Washington D.C.  Several of our Board members will be on hand to accept the award should we win.
As we head in to the holiday season, you'll want to mark your calendar for the November General Meeting on November 17th.  That meeting will feature Susan MacLean from the Solutions Group who will present
"How to Help Your Employees Survive the Holidays...without therapy!"   Ms. MacLean, who is President/CEO for the Solutions Group, holds a Master's degree in Community Health Education and a Bachelor's in Business Administration.  A skilled speaker and trainer, Susan delivers interpersonal skill development and workplace wellness workshops to organizations across the Southwest.  She has the unique ability to both motivate and inspire her audiences using practical application, humor and applied learning. I know her program will be timely, interesting and enjoyable to listen to.  I hope to see you there.

As always, we value your membership and look forward to serving you today, tomorrow and next year. If the HRMA Board or I can assist you in anyway, please don't hesitate to call on us.

See you soon!
