July 2 2012

Dear Friends,
I'm sending this short e-news just before the 4th of July about decks in case you get to thinking about your deck and how it is serving your needs. What is the best time to build a deck? Check below for some things to consider!
And have a safe and celebrative July 4!

Is there a best time to build a deck?

This question was posted recently on city-data.com:

"Anyone know when the most cost efficient time of the year to hire someone to build a deck is ? Should we wait until fall/winter? Is there even an off-season? In March a builder told us he had excess inventory and that it was a good time to start work. We know we want to do it late this year or sometime next year, just want to make sure we choose the best time of year, cost wise. Thanks!"

Really Big Shoe replied: "I buy my materials year round for the same price. Excess materials comes from either a canceled contract or bad planning (aside from cut debris, which would not be much). If you are wanting cheap we can always cut corners and leave stuff out for you to get that price down -just kidding!
That's my way of saying find a reputable builder who will give you a fair price. Fair is never cheap, but it's always fair. We warranty our stuff for free. How much is peace of mind worth to you?
Fair pricing is important for both ends of the exchange. I hope this helps."

So the answer to when is the best time comes down to when is the best time for you? When do you have the funds, and when do you want to start using  your deck? If you sign a contract early in July, you can still get pretty good use out a deck in August, September and October. And you can stain it in October before winter strikes, and after it has had a chance to dry out a bit.
But whatever works for you. As far as the builder is concerned, any time is a good time. Winter tends to be a slower time of year when we are looking for projects, but its colder and the ground may be frozen, making it harder to dig pier holes.
So if you have a plan, meaning a layout you have in mind and you've figured out how to pay for it, call your contractor and see if he can schedule your deck project, so you can start enjoying it! And don't worry, your contractor will have some ideas about how to implement the concepts you have in mind.
