| Many homes are built without a lot of consideration for how residents will live as they age. For example, knee and hip surgery have increased even among folks age 45 to 55:
"We're becoming a nation of bum knees, worn-out hips and sore shoulders, and it's not just the Medicare set. Baby boomer bones and joints also are taking a pounding, spawning a boom in operations to fix them".
(Reporter: AP).
So what happens when someone lives in a Peter Pan house, and the joints give out? Even if the person has surgery to fix it, there is limited mobility leading up to and following surgery.
You know where I'm going with this, don't you? Planning, and prepare our homes for the day we won't be as mobile makes good sense. "Oh I'll just go to a nursing home, or assisted living." Really? That can be more expensive than one might be prepared to undertake early on. And the lifestyle may be more restrictive than you want.
You can bridge this chasm with some prior planning to have the access you need when you need it in your own home by making modifications to keep you active in your own home for longer. Or, if you are building new, consider that your mobility will decrease as you age, and build accordingly. It doesn't have to be a self fulfilling prophecy, just considerate it wise planning for the future!
We at Venture Builders are regularly helping people make their homes more accessible. If you need to update your "Peter Pan" house, or know someone who does, call our estimator for an appointment.
