Keeping Your Pets Safe at Home
You have read our suggestions for how to make your home safer for you and your family. (If you missed it, click here for the archivDoged issue.) But this article addresses the safety of pets at home. 

The Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) created a list of household safety concerns:

Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pet

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Avocado
  • Chocolate & Coffee (all forms)
  • Fatty foods
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Moldy or spoiled foods
  • Onions, onion powder, and garlic
  • Raisins and grapes
  • Salt
  • Yeast dough
  • Products sweetened with xylitol
Medication
Common examples of human medications that can be potentially lethal to pets, even in small doses, include:
  • Pain killers
  • Cold medicines
  • Anti-cancer drugs
  • Antidepressants
  • Vitamins
  • Diet Pills Cold Weather Hazards
  • Antifreeze
  • Liquid potpourri
  • Ice melting products
  • Rat and mouse bait  
Common Household Hazards
  • Fabric softener sheets
  • Mothballs
  • Post-1982 pennies (due to high concentration of zinc)
Holiday Hazards
  • Christmas tree water (may contain fertilizers and bacteria, which, if ingested, can upset the stomach.
  • Electrical cords
  • Ribbons or tinsel (can become lodged in the intestines and cause intestinal obstruction-most often occurs with kittens!)
  • Batteries
  • Glass ornaments

Home Energy Audit


Jeremy Blosser of Venture Builders and Benjamin Meredith of Building Knowledge have partnered to offer a home energy audit.

The audit report recommends opportunities for homeowners to save. The report includes a breakdown of the estimated cost of improvements and the estimated annual savings.
