Gardening Solutionz Newsletter

Summer 2011
Greetings!

Roll on 2012 - this time last year we would have never imagined how much our lives would be affected by seismic activity.  Fortunately the nursery has come through with very little damage and the plants have flourished with a little bit of root tickling.

We have had a exciting spring with loads of new releases hitting the garden centre shelves.  In the past couple of weeks we have released the amazing world acclaimed SunPatiens and the new Dahlia Mystic series.  Also to look out for is the perfect Christmas gift - Petunia Raspberry Blast and Blueberry Crush with its cupcake labels or the Dianthus Scent From Heaven series with gift giving names like Angel of Peace and Angel of Charm.

Plant Of The Month

A truly unique spin on an old friend - the SunPatiens series has just been released in New Zealand.  This sun tolerant variety of the tried and true favourite annual, blooms longer and bushier than other impatiens on the market.

Developed in Japan more than five years ago, these beauties are the first impatiens to thrive in full hot sun all summer long.  Performing with gusto, they will flower from spring through to the first frosts.

One touch of their thick large showy petals is enough to see why these stunners are so tough and prosper anywhere (sun or shade).  Use them in containers, baskets or in the garden and you'll be blessed with massive flower power and vigorous growth - its all about flower and colour this season.

PS look out for them in your local garden centre - their SUN shaped label is unique

Just released is a contemporary range of Dahlia - the Mystic Series - just right for todays gardens.  These beauties are set apart from other Dahlia by their highly fashionable filigreed mahogany to black foliage topped with the most vivid blooms.

Dahlia DreamCatcher

These Dahlias will enliven even the dullest of gardens with their textural foliage and vivid blooms; they are truly colour invigorating.  Oozing with lushness and sophistication, they are complimentary amongst even low maintenance native gardens as impact colour spots - with this series you are really spoilt for choice.

  • Vivid blooms in a range of fashion colours (7 to choose from)
  • Good vase life
  • Black foliage
  • Long flowering period
  • Staking not required

And best of all these are NZ born and bred!

Hi, my Mystic Spirit Dahlia has finished blooming and now looks dry and dead.  Is this normal?  Do I cut it way back to the bulbs?
Thank you Patricia

Answer:  Hi Patricia,

I take it that you are on the other side of the world from us in New Zealand - as ours are just popping up in the garden now and will be flowering in December.  Some people, as their Dahlias start dying back in late autumn will dig up their bulbs and store them for winter whereas in my garden, I just give the plant a trim in late autumn and let it die down for winter and then in spring they just pop back up again.

And there was a reply of:

Hello Megan, yes I am from California and thank you for the information, I will cut them back and enjoy their blooms in spring.  My best to you.
