Gardening Solutionz Newsletter
Spring 2010

Greetings!

We are all shook up!  And still shaking!  What a week we have had here in Christchurch and our plants just seem to have no idea - they  are flourishing.

Garden Centres looking for the first glimpse of spring colour have been busy ordering flowering lavenders, lavenders and yet more lavenders - it is a sure sign that spring has arrived and they are as popular as ever.

Our pick plants for this spring is the new 'perfect perennial' Petunia Raspberry Blast and the dazzling new SuperCal Petchoa Series (both will be available from the first week of October in garden centres nationwide).
Plant Of The Month
Lavenders

Lavender is amongst one of the earliest plants introduced into NZ by Europeans and belongs to the mint family which includes herbs suchs as sage, thyme and rosemary.  It is has been in documented use for over 2,500 years.

Are you confused by the choice on the market?  It is Italian or is it English?  Here are some of our favourites:

Lavender stoechas Major
Lavender MajorOne of the best lavenders available, this Italian little beauty produces an abundance of rich, dark purple flowers from early spring through to late summer and grows to approx 60 cm tall.

The Ruffles Lavender Series

A truly remarkable breeding development in Petunias has led to the breeding of Petunia Raspberry Blast with a breakthrough new colouring of pink blooms edged in deep cerise pink - it is bound to make you say wow!  Bred for its trailing habit, continual flowering and tolerance to extreme heat, this low maintenance little beauty is a winner for containers, hanging baskets and the general garden bed.

We are so excited about this new release.  We have had a season with it in our own gardens and believe it truly is the 'perfect perennial'.
The Dazzling New SuperCal Petchoa Series

SuperCal Petchoa
This new series is about to hit garden centres nationwide and with a choice of five colours - the hardest decision will be choosing your favourite colour.

These are the first of their kind being a cross between the larger flowering Petunia (hence 'Pet")and the smaller flower of the Calibroachoa (hence 'Choa') and of course they are super.  SuperCal Petchoas are very strong in habit, don't die away from the centres and require very little maintenance.

Griselinia Broadway Mint

If you have any gardening questions you would like answered - please contact us.  This Months question is:

Question: Hi, I live in South Canterbury.  My Griselinia littoralis are very sad with black leaves falling to the ground.  We had peastraw close up to the roots and the ground is very wet/clay - is that a problem or is it disease?

Answer: Thanks for your email.  I have just had a talk to our nursery manager and his thoughts are that your Griselinia may have been affected by frost.  Griselinias are pretty resilient to wet soil.  Without seeing the plant I would suggest taking a leaf sample to your local garden centre if you can or if you have a photo of the plant you could forwards it to us.
