BCC 50 Years
BCC campus
In celebration of Berkshire Community College's 50th year, we are proud to feature the BCC Alum of the Month!  Throughout the 2009-2010 academic year, we will spotlight outstanding alumni who have made exceptional contributions to their professions or communities.  Through distribution of this E-Newsletter, we seek to recognize alumni who are doing interesting things in the world, and to celebrate the rich diversity of BCC alumni over the past 50 years.

Jodi Rathbun BriggsJodi Rathbun-Briggs, '92 Business Careers

In an email to friends and family asking for support for the recent BCC Foundation Fundraiser, Jodi writes:  "I believe in Berkshire Community College's mission to place higher education within reach of all Berkshire County residents.  I am speaking from experience.  When I didn't think I was college bound because of my father's battle with cancer, BCC allowed me to better myself through part-time educational opportunities."

Jodi is a model example of a BCC Alumna living and working in Berkshire County. As Vice President of The Legacy Banks Foundation and Vice President of Commercial Banking at Legacy Banks, Jodi manages relationships with Legacy's commerical clients -- large and small.  She also serves on the Board for Community Health Programs and the Community Impact Board for Berkshire United Way.

A native of Lee, Jodi started classes at BCC while still in high school.  During her senior year, Jodi was working as an intern at the former Lee National Bank and her supervisors sent her to a banking class at BCC.  While she admits she had not been an A student in high school, she scored an A in that Banking class, and decided to try some more.  Jodi worked at the bank around her classes at BCC, all the while expecting an Associate's Degree would be the end of her formal education.  However, her BCC Advisor encouraged her to continue on and Jodi transferred to Western New England College where she earned her Bachelor's Degree, and she eventually became a Certified Public Accountant as well.

Edward and Jodi BriggsJodi went to work as an accountant at Adelson & Co., and then Riley, Haddad, Lombardi and Clairmont.  After getting married to Edward Briggs she was looking for a change of pace and applied for an internal auditor position at the then City Savings Bank.  She was promoted a few times within that area and then five years ago, Legacy CEO Bill Dunleavy asked her to consider switching to the Commercial Lending side of the business.

Jodi's testimony continues:  "BCC's education gave me a great foundation to continue to learn and grow and build self esteem.  Without BCC, I'm not sure how my life would have turned out.  Would I be in a dead end job somewhere? Only God knows.  BCC allowed me to obtain an education that would not have been possible for me during that difficult time. It allowed me to succeed when I transferred to another school.  And it allowed me to return to my roots in this terrific community."
