2009 David Mathis Student-Athlete of the Year Award Pursuing Victory With Honor Sport Nominees Ponte Vedra High School - 2008-2009 Each year, the St Johns County School Board and a local, independent donor choose a St Johns County Student-Athlete of the Year. The selection process for this award is for each team at each of the county schools (including St Joseph's and Florida School for the Deaf and Blind) to submit a representative of the county's Pursuing Victory With Honor Initiative. Each team nominee must be a varsity letter winner, but may be any class (Freshman to Senior). From this group of team nominees, each school submits one, Senior, Student-Athlete as its Student-Athlete of the Year. This candidate, then, completes for the county-wide Student-Athlete of the Year (David Mathis Award) honor and is invited to the annual Character Counts Banquet in the spring. The county-wide winner receives a cash stipend to apply toward college tuition, thus making underclassmen ineligible. This year, Ponte Vedra High School has no seniors, so won't be represented by a nominee for Student-Athlete of the Year, however, each coaching staff has designated a team representative who most clearly represents the ideals of Pursuing Victory With Honor. Ponte Vedra High School Team Representatives:
Elaine Peete Girls Golf Chipper Hughes Boys Golf Sarah Della Porta Volleyball Ashley Nadeau Girls X Country Robby Allten Boys X Country Monica Rice Diving Mary Grace McCreary Girls Swimming Harrison Goodall Boys Swimming Chris Damm Football Avery Kuiper Girls Basketball Drew Deegan Boys Basketball Drew Daniel Wrestling Jessica Stephens Girls Soccer Michael Della Porta Boys Soccer Ansley Vanover Girls Tennis Daniel Rush Boys Tennis Kelsey O'Brian Girls Lacrosse Logan Hansen Boys Lacrosse Caroline Davis Girls Track and Field Branden Paynter Boys Track and Field C J Moraneic Boys Weightlifting Kristyn Mantia Softball Brett Mueller Baseball Abbey Smith Cheerleading
The honorees will each receive a specially-designed "Pursuing Victory With Honor" pin to display on their varsity letter. CONGRATULATIONS!
The Science department would love your discards!
We will have several new science courses next year, including AP Environmental Science and Marine Science. We are still looking for an aquarium/equipment that you no longer use. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Please contact Marna Fox at foxm@stjohns.k12.fl.us with any questions.
Swine Flu Update
At this time there are no confirmed cases of swine flu in St. Johns County or in the state of Florida. (4-30-09, 0700 hrs.)
Surveillance has been increased at the local and state level. St. Johns County Health Department Director, Dawn C. Allicock, M.D., M.P.H. states, "Although there are no confirmed cases of swine flu in Florida at this time, our plans remain the same and stress the importance of prevention." If your child exhibits flu-like symptoms, seek medical attention from your pediatrician.
The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Some people have reported vomiting and diarrhea with swine flu. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.
There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you get sick with influenza, Department of Health (DOH) recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
The Florida Department of Health is receiving frequent updates from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and is monitoring the situation, and will immediately follow up on any suspected cases. The CDC has created a Webpage with information at www.cdc.gov/swineflu .
Call the local County Health Department at (904) 825-5055 ext 1087, if you need additional information.
