Printing - Is Less More?
As digital printing technology continues to advance, the marketing industry is rethinking when to use offset versus short-run solutions. Just a few years ago, you had to go with offset (and its higher setup costs) to get the high quality printing needed for pieces with images - especially for 4-color photos and graphics. Digital was only for lower-end, short-run jobs. Today, color digital printing produces surprisingly good quality pieces, making short-run lengths of full-color materials cost-effective and customizable. This enables businesses to use color and variable printing to create narrowly targeted pieces that are more effective. For now, offset is still the best option for long-run, larger format projects and when very high quality and/or varnish is needed. But, in many cases, printing less can be more.
QuickTip - Cut Through the Clutter
According to some research, Americans are exposed to an average of 3,000 marketing impressions every day. Of these, they notice far less than 5% and act upon only a few. So, how do you cut through all this clutter? You must create communications that stand out and refuse to go unnoticed. If you don't, they land in the recycle bin or fall on deaf ears with no impact.  Three keys to creating pieces that work are: 1) make the format impossible to ignore by using dimensional mailers and unusual packaging; 2) utilize truly exceptional creative that is so startling or intriguing that it cannot be missed; 3) boldly convey an offer of superior value and relevance, right up front where it will get noticed. For Internet campaigns, personalize and target as much as possible. It is likely that these approaches will be more costly than your average postcard, but the days of having a postcard grab attention and be effective are pretty much over. Cut through the clutter and carve out your market share.
