The Blossom
June, 2012 Edition

Greetings!

There is a big transition happening here at Sunshine Gardens!

First let me introduce myself to you.  My name is Christie Schler and I am the new Marketing Director at Sunshine Gardens.  Our dear Trisha Kellogg is on her way to Missouri with her lovely family to begin the next chapter of their lives.  Please see the story bellow by resident Lou Gans who explains Trisha's move and what a loss this is for those who love and will miss her here.

This is not my first acquaintance with Sunshine Gardens.  I had the privilege of starting my career in healthcare here shortly after the doors opened at Sunshine Gardens West.  I was a caregiver for 5 years in the early stages of the assisted living's growth, and now, WOW! am I amazed at the growth that has happened while I've been away!  It was an amazing place when I started here and it has only blossomed into a more connected and vibrant community than I could have imagined.

If you're in the building this month, come stop by and say hello and update me on what's new at Sunshine Gardens since I was last here.  I look forward to re-connecting with old faces and building connections with all of you who will be new to me!!

Caregiver's Corner
By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident

Farewell to two fabulous, great, intelligent, and very useful individuals.  Husband Mark Kellogg, professor and national championship coach of Fort Lewis College women's basketball team, is moving permanently away with other plans in his career.  Trisha Kellogg, the wife of Mark, too has numerous plans as well - are we sad?  This sheet is wet with tears.  It goes without saying we wish them all the best - though with their exceptional talent we know their success is unquestionable.  Our love remains with you.  To follow Mark's team which is the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats, follow the Durango news sports section for team results.

Caregiver Jacquelyn: This actively, smart and helpful caregiver  was born in Mesa, AZ and later lived in Ogallala.  Jaquelyn, then was employed as a CNA for 5 years.  She joined her family to move to Durango.  Prior to this she attended Amarillo College to obtain her CNA certificate.  3 of her siblings reside in Texas, except Greg who lives in Nebraska.  Not married now, but maybe someday soon.  Jacquelyn your future lies ahead of you; thus we wish the best for you.
The Sunshine Garden

Well, the Sunshine Garden is in and now all we have to do is wait for the results.  Yesterday, June 5th four residence under the supervision of our Activity Director, Heather, planted it.  They included: George, Ben, Leiva, and myself.  Heather has started some of the plants; tomatoes, peppers and basil in pots that she kept in the Sunshine Room, under growing lights.  The garden is located just outside the dining hall windows.  Heather had earlier planted spinach and it is just beginning to come up.  We also planted some Marigolds.  These flowers help keep the bus off the plans and we hope the deer will stay away.

Why Employers Value Older Workers

Thanks to: US News World Report

Are you thinking your age can hinder you from your career, job opportunities or advancement?  The article below may change your mind.  In my opinion, successful, hard working people can be found at all ages.  Whether young or old, do not let your age hinder you from your goals and dreams!

Enjoy!
