Dear Family and Friends,

September ended with un-seasonably warm temperatures, cool breezes, sunshine, and colors so lovely; one would think gold and jewels were falling from the trees.  Drang is lovely this time of year, and as we enter into October, the chilly, crisp air will soon be here.

At Sunshine Gardens, the change to "sweater season" means assembling around our cozy fireplace, baking yummy goodies, drinking warm tea and hot chocolate, and preparing for the up-coming holiday season.

Besides the traditional holidays most celebrate like Thanksgiving and Christmas, we also are mindful of alternative observances.  For example, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Recognizing breast cancer effects so many of our friends, family members, and residents, alike, Sunshine Gardens is pleased to announce we are Prime Sponsors of Mercy Regional Hospital's Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.

Joy Hess and Karen Midkiff of Mercy Hospice, are hosting a 5K walk/run on October 1st, at Mercy Regional Hospital (Outside the Breast Cancer Center).  Sunshine Gardens is sponsoring this event.  In addition, there will be a video commercial in the hospital.  The commercial will highlight Sunshine Gardens commitment to support the fight against breast cancer, while educating people in and around our community about the wonderful, caring services we offer.  We are thrilled for this opportunity and encourage you to check out the production on the history wall at Mercy Regional Medical Center.

Please join us in all of the fun at Sunshine Gardens.  Whether it be participating in local fundraisers like the Breast Cancer Walk/Run or simply drinking a cup of cocoa with one of our residents, there are many opportunities to be a part of Sunshine Gardens Senior Community and participate in great events that help the community and change lives!

        Caregiver's Corner

By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident

Born in Portland, Oregon, this caregiver lived just about everywhere including Yellowstone National Park, Gardner and Big Sky, Montana; Portland, Medford, Byron, Perry, Warner, Robins, and elsewhere  Her name is Jeanette Underwood.

Education is important to her as she studied Marketing Management at Valdosta State University and Logistics Management at Georgia Military College.

Her pop and mom both worked for the government.  Jeanette has one brother named Mathew.

Jeanette is not yet married, but lives with her boyfriend on a ranch here in Durango.  She really enjoys the beauty it offers.

Jeanette's vast traveling experiences include New Zealand, Asia, South America, and Central America.

Jeanette's future ambitions are uncertain.  Her interests in life are many-fold.  Perhaps someday, they'll be revealed to you, Jeanette.  Good luck!  Thanks for all you do!

Full of affection, care, concern, and a great sense of humor, this caregiver's early life was different.  It was consumed with a bundle of unhappiness as this story unfolds.  Her name is Mattie Lynn Baker.

Mattie was born in Colorado Springs, then resided in Pueblo, Fort Carson, and now Durango.

Mattie was employed previously as a pre-school teacher, but as Mattie states, her prior passion was working for a non-profit organization called the "Beads of Life."  They sell beads made by Kenyan women whose lives are affected by AIDS.  They are beautiful creations made from paper, glue, and water.  You would, however, think they were made of precious stones.

Mattie originally came to Durango to attend school, but soon after left to be closer to her family in Denver.  She, however, missed Durango and came back to have fun and plan her next move.

Mattie's parents are Patti and Tim Sope.  Her mom is a therapist, who specializes in attachment issues and her father is an alternate modes of transportation planner for the county of Boulder.

Mattie traveled to Juarez, Mexico, where she built houses and schools for the people.  Mattie has a big heart and plans to finish her schooling, potentially studying nursing.

Mattie grew up in foster care (age 12-17), and was adopted at 17.  Everything good that she has, Mattie owes to her parents, she explains.  "To be adopted at that age is a miracle and a blessing.  Everyday I am reminded of how much I have to give back.  I am so, so grateful for them!"

And we are grateful for you!  Mattie Lynn Baker, you help make Sunshine Gardens what it is...caring, loving, full of humor, and simply the best.  We all love you.

About Our Residents

By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident

Born in Durango, CO, this new resident spent most of his time in Durango, beside a stint in Cortez and Fort Collins.  He was occupied in retail sales.

Fred is well-known locally, especially, because he and his family owned a well-known company called Kroegers Hardware.  The store sold to an un-related person within the last decade and the name of the buyer, coincidentally is Kroger (No, not Kroeger!).  This company founded by the Kroeger family has been in business for about a century.  It first operated as a feed store, but gradually became a hardware store and is now referred by many as a mini-department store.

Fred was born at Mercy Hospital and is one of the only original "Durangoans" still living in Durango.  Fred spent his schooling years in Durango, before attending college at a university in Fort Collins.

Fred's mom was a housewife, while his dad was also in retail sales after his farming days.  Fred also has a sister who lives in Durango.

Looking ahead, Fred aspires to be healthy and happy.  We're all with you, Fred.  Thank you for being so wonderful and you and your family's contribution to society!  We are honored that you live with us at Sunshine Gardens!

Dwayne is a strong young man at the construction site and he was bragging that he could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of making fun of one of the older workmen, George. After several minutes, George had had as much as he was willing to take.

'OK, Dwayne, why don't you put your money where your mouth is?' he stated thoughtfully. 'I will bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that outbuilding that you won't be able to wheel back.'

'You're on, old man,' Dwayne, the braggart replied, smirking. 'Let's see what you got.'

George, the old fellow, reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then, nodding to Dwayne, he said, 'All right. Get in.'
