Dear Family and Friends,
The month of July is a time to celebrate our freedom, our independence, and recognize how fortunate we, as a nation, truly are. Please take time to say thank you to our service men and women! They are the heroes that make our lives so special! We pray for your safety and strength!
Independence is a strong word that means, when sovereignty was achieved. We can apply this to our personal lives, as well. Sovereignty over our hearts, souls, and spirits. I see so many residents come into Sunshine Gardens with the struggle for independence. They feel like accepting help means failing. What they come to find is that accepting our help only frees them to enjoy more of what interests them. They can worry less about laundry and housekeeping and spend more time talking with friends, going on walks or playing in the garden. Their sovereignty is supreme independence over their happiness and sense of self-worth! What a special thing to have!
Enjoy a wonderful Fourth of July weekend and month of July in general! Together, we are one, happy, independent group enjoying the freedoms afforded us! |

FEATURED RESIDENTS By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident
This new and pleasant resident has spent many years gaining a superb education far beyond a high school diploma, which provided him a teaching career. He helped students who required speech therapy.
His name is Bill Steinberg and he was born in Illinois. From there he migrated to Texas, Kentucky, Nebraska, and many more places.
Bill's higher education consists of a Bachelor's degree earned at Southwest Texas State and a Masters degree at Texas A&M. Two of Bill's children live in Durango and 2 live in Houston, TX.
He has traveled to Alaska where he spent 5 years and in numerous other places, as well. Bill aspires to be comfortable and happy. He certainly has choices at Sunshine Gardens where this can be attainable. He enjoys reading and playing scrabble; for I, too, like to participate in scrabble. With open arms we welcome you, Bill!
Born in San Diego, California, this new resident lived in over a dozen states henceforth, he is Charles Metz. Between his education, military career, and employment, Charles is doing just about everything. For example, he was a psychologist, an aero-designer, militarily went from the ranks Private to Captain commanding an intelligence unit.
Charles spent 1 1/2 years at the Walter Reed Hospital after the Korean War and finally retired, unfortunately, with 60% disability.
His high level of education earned him a Bachelors and Masters degree in Psychology.
Charles enjoys visiting his entire family who live in Durango. They own and operate 2 restaurants!
As a youth, Charlie spent many years in foster homes. Life was not easy.

CAREGIVER'S CORNER
By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident A rare specimen is our recently acquired care giver. She's quite rare since she read the dining room plaque expressing our appreciation of the untiring efforts of the care staff to please the residents, before anyone pointed to it.
Her name is Misty Trujillo. She was born in Phoenix, AZ and moved to Las Vegas, NV, and shortly thereafter to Durango.
Occupied in housekeeping, dietary certifications, and as a CNA, Misty graduated from Durango High School.
Misty's mom is a pre-school teacher and her father is a dry wall finisher.
Misty's twin sister and younger brother live in Durango, while Misty is busy raising her two toddlers, Mia and Kiara. She enjoys her free moments playing with them!
Misty aspires to attend school to become a nurse. Misty, we'll cheer you on to success. Your mind is properly geared! Both happiness and success awaits you! |
PICNIC AT THE PARK
By: Laddie John, Sunshine Gardens Resident
On Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010, Heather, our Activity Director, made arrangements with Robert, the Chef to fix a picnic lunch for the residents. The picnic was to be at Santa Rita Park.
There were 11 residents that signed up. We all boarded the bus at Sunshine Gardens at 11:15 A.M. and were driven to the park.
We got to the park about 11:30, unloaded and Heather started setting up the tables. She put red checkered table cloths on the one table that we were all able to get around.
It was a beautiful day, with no clouds in the sky. It was calm, the temperature in the 80's. However, at times there was a cooling breeze that blew through the covered pavilion.
The menu was: fried chicken, baked beans, biscuits, pasta salad, and watermelon. We had water, apple juice, grape juice, or lemon aide to drink. For dessert, we had the choice apple or cherry pie!
A good time was had by all. We owe a big thanks to Heather and Robert!!
Memorial Service for Harold Thies
By: Laddie John, Sunshine Gardens Resident
On June 9th, 2010, a Memorial for Harold Thies was organized by two staff members, Kari and Mary. It was the first one ever held here, but will be done on a regular basis in the future, however, only with the family's approval.
The service was held in the Sunshine Garden's Chapel. It was well attended. There were 15 residents, 9 staff members, Activity Director Heather, and three from Administration. Harold's three daughters and a friend were also in attendance.
Mary requested that if anyone wanted to say something about Harold they were free to do so. Many expressed things they liked about him. The family told us quite a bit about Harold. He grew up in Nebraska on a farm. His remains will be taken there.
The staff gave the family a "living" tree. This is planted outside, as requested by the family; just outside of his house here at Sunshine Gardens. |
