Interesting Facts About June

Thanks To: www.entourages.com

According to the Georgian calendar, which is used over most of the world today, June is the sixth month. On the Roman calendar, it was considered the fourth month and had only 29 days. Julius Ceasar gave the month 30 days in 46 B.C., when he reformed the Roman calendar.

Spring ends and summer begins around June 20, 21, or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. It's the time that the flowers are beautiful. It is especially the month for roses. In the Southern hemisphere, winter begins during June, and it brings cold, rainy weather to this part of the world.

The JUNE BUG also known as June beetle, is the name for several large beetles seen in the United States during May and June. They are usually seen at night, when the light attracts them.

June bugs eat the young leaves of trees and plants. They deposit their eggs in the ground. The young larvae bury themselves in the soil in the autumn and stay there two years. They then come out in May or June as adult beetles.

FEATURED RESIDENTS
By: Lou Gans, Sunshine Gardens Resident

Born in Scott City, Kansas, this new Sunshine Gardens West resident lived in several cities including Wichita, KS and various cities in Colorado and Texas.

She is Florence Japhet, a very pleasant person whose occupations include Farming, Airplane Factory Work, and owning a Motel and Car Wash; quite an enterprising person.

Her father was a farmer and her mom a school teacher.  Florence's decision to come to Durango is based upon her desire to see her grand children as they grow up.  You see, her son and his family lives here.

Florence traveled to Seattle and followed the coast down to Arizona and New Mexico some time ago and she loved this trip!

Florence met her future spouse while working at his uncle's ranch.  When Florence went on her first date with her "future" husband, they were horseback riding.  Unfortunately, her horse disliked females and tossed her into a barbed wire fence The result was 21 stitches and a year of recovery!!!  We suggest you refrain from mounting women-hating horses in the future!

Keep your spirits up, Florence. Remain happy and the best of everything to you!

This pleasant and appealing SGW resident was born in a the small town of Fairview, MO, and eventually moved to Jackson and Hellsdale, MI, and later to the warm climate of Glendale, CA. Her name is Hester Mae Hersha.

Her days of employment included being a telephone operator and a bookkeeper.  She enjoyed mostly being a homemaker.

Hester graduated from Frontier High School and that is where she met her husband to be.  They were married for 51 years and he is now deceased.

Hester's one brother, he late Hillard Rodgers, fought in WWII.

Hester's daughter Cathy Jane lives in California and daughter Lisa Joyce lives in Durango.  You probably see her volunteering with Sunshine Garden's residents!  Thanks, Lisa!

Hester has traveled to Hawaii and Florida.  In the 8th grade, Hester transferred from a large school in Missouri to a one room school house in Michigan.  Though difficult, she learned a lot.

Walking one day out of a department store in Michigan, a large glass window came loose and fell on Hester.  It almost cut off her leg.  Fortunately, after months of healing, she recuperated.  In those days, no one thought about suing!

Hester has 5 grand children and 7 great-grand children.  Hester, we advise you to stay away from department stores!

Free Zumba classes are underway for all employees and staff at Sunshine Gardens.  Check with Linda or Trish for class times.

A special thank you to Eugine "Charlie" Mitzer, for generously donating a new stereo system for the dining room!  Staff and residents are thrilled to have it.

Happy Father's Day to all of you amazing fathers out there!  We love and adore you!

Sincerely,

Trisha Kellogg-Marketing Director
