Dear Family and Friends,
Those April snow showers will certainly bring May flowers! Happy May Day and Happy Mother's Day to all our lovely mommy's out there! We LOVE you!
Here's a fun, little superstition about May:
First thing in the morning on May 1st, young girls used to rush in the garden to wash their faces. Why? There is an old tale that says that May due has magic properties and that anyone who has washed their face in it will have a beautiful complexion all through the year. This was supposed to be able to remove freckles, spots, and pimples.
Hmmm, take away my spots and pimples, but I think freckles are kinda cute! Nonetheless, it's kind of an interesting story, right?!?!
A reminder to residents, family and friends: As the weather continues to be sunny we ask that residents take extra precautions while outside. Make sure to wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and stay close to the facility while on any walks or outings.
Summer is on it's way!!! Hip Hip Hooray!

Sunshine Gardens Attends Spring Assisted Living Conference By: Trisha Kellogg, Marketing Director
Recently, Administrators Joanna Dominguez, Linda Mathews, Tayna Adams, along with myself Marketing Director Trisha Kellogg and Sunshine Gardens Owner Robert Hilger, attended the Colorado Spring Assisted Living Conference in Black Hawk, Colorado. The conference was put on by the Colorado Assisted Living Association.
The two day event consisted of a variety of informational workshops concerning the assisted living industry from caregiving and dining to social networking and financial exploitation. The conference also hosted an open forum discussion with industry experts. It was very beneficial to learn best practices and work together to improve our business operations, and most important, the overall care of our residents.
We walked away from the conference feeling really good about Sunshine Gardens, the Country Home, and the care we provide. In talking with other facility owners and administrators, we learned that we have the right goals and objectives and are implementing what is required to offer the best possible place to live for our aging loved ones! We will continue to work to "stay with the times," offer new and exciting living options, and meet the growing needs and desires of our residents! Workshops like this help improve administration, staff, and ultimately, the care of our residents.

SUNSHINE GARDENS RESIDENT SETS A WORLD RECORD!
By: RayKowalchuk, Sunshine Gardens Resident
Tony Lopez, member of our three o'clock poker club, set a world record for a low ball poker hand.
The cards were dealt and a player opened for one penny, then Tony raised 5 cents. Three players dropped out, two players threw in 5 cents a piece. Tony drew one card, then bet 10 cents. The remaining players dropped out and Tony won the pot.
Tony showed us his winning hand. The room was silent, we gazed in astonishment at the cards. All the fish in the aquarium gasped for water, a caregiver was cleaning in the hallway and even the vacuum blew a fuse! Tony had a FULL HOUSE, 3 duces and a pair of 6's!
With a tear in his eye and a sheepish smile on his face, he then yelled out his famous YAAHOOOOOO!!!! Well done, Tony! Well done!
Players in attendance were Tony Lopez, George Hayo, Lester Monell, Laddie John, Bill Steinberg, Ray Kowalchuk, and guest Bret Koster.
Bill Steinberg's daughter, Cindy, surprised the poker players with shirts. Embroidered on the shirts are: "Three O'clock Poker Club," four playing cards are on them (each one an ace), and our name.
A thank you card was mailed to Cindy and signed by all!
